I am sure this has been covered previously, but I have just purchased a TomTom 1 XL Europe, is it best to download new maps direct via tomtom or are there other manufactures who produce better maps.
How do you go about downloading the maps? |

Hi. The only place you can get the maps is by downloading them direct from Tomtom using the Tomtom HOME software. Make sure you do a full backup before updating anything, preferably twice, see the 'stickies' at the start of the Tomtom GO/RIDER/ONE forum!!

After the purchase of a Tomtom sat nav you have 30 days in which to receive a free update to the latest maps !!
My advice would be to leave the update to near the end of the 30 days in case tomtom release a newer map towards the end of your 30 day period
Portman gave some excellent advise to make a back up of your system before doing anything to your device the general consensus on the forum is to back up in Windows rather than Home ( or do both).
Also make sure you disconnect your device correctly as many people have suffered the corrupted software issue by not using the the correct disconnect device procedure |

I am not too sure the One XL actually ships with a latest map guarantee card in the box. I wouldn't get to hung up about map version numbers though, to check what you have installed tap the sat strength meter (lower right corner) v715 is currently the latest map for your device.
If the map that you have works for you then save some cash and simply use it until you find it is out of date. Major roads don't get built everyday, when you find the map wrong it is time to consider replacing it (at a price).
The only other reason to change the map installed to the device is to make use of new features/ functionality with updated software. As version 8 software is now available on the new x30 devices it is expected it will be extended to cover more of the existing range - Mike |

You'll find instructions here.
EDITED to add: The instructions in the above link refer to the x00 and x10 series TomToms, and to copying from the card. They also apply to the x20's internal memory. _________________ Anita
