After many years using desktops, I've just bought a new Toshiba laptop. I know virtually nothing about GPS (apart from owning a F-S Loox which gives the wrong directions!) but I want to be able to use Ordnance Survey maps loaded into the laptop and use a GPS receiver to pinpoint my position in my vehicle using map references (for my archaeology hobby), also as a normal gps in Europe. A knowledgeable friend has recommended the GLOBALSAT MR-350 WATERPROOF PS2 GPS RECEIVER using USB to connect to the laptop and Navigator as the map source. Is this a good ploy? Any advice welcome. |

Does the laptop have Bluetooth as this will open up a whole raft of different options. If not any NMEA standard receiver will work fine with the davice and software - Mike |

In which case I would look towards a Bluetooth GPS receiver as these are more portable and don't rely upon power from the host device (they can also be used with a PDA device should decide to get one).
Have a search for information on the Holux GPSlim 240 or Qstarz receivers, they are both decent devices, the Qstarz probably has the edge due to the 32+ hours usage from a single battery charge - Mike |
