NavNGo today announced a version of iGO MyWay 8 for the iPhone. It will use an 'upcoming iPhone GPS receiver'. this is surprising news indeed. Currently the iPhone is a closed device that cannot use third part applications unless you JailBreak the device.
Apple are scheduled to launch the SDK which will enable the use of 3rd party apps later this month so news such as this was not expected until after the SDK launch. A demo video is available at YouTube. we will of course post more details as soon as we have them! |

I was rather hoping our esteemed editor might be prepared to reveal an invitation to Amsterdam to coincide with the WWDC on June 9th? Anything? Dust? No? Dust? No? Dust? Sadly not, I had toyed with the idea of going to the WWDC instead but they sold out before I could book
It does look like the new iPhone will have GPS, their is Photo Geotagging in the latest beta firmware and other references to GPS in hardware. Nowt revolutionary there so lets hope Apple or a 3rd party have been working on something special _________________ Darren Griffin |

A posting on electronista.com today states:
"the most recent version of the iPhone SDK, Section 3.3.7 of the license agreement tells users that 'applications may not be designed or marketed for real time route guidance; automatic or autonomous control of vehicles, aircraft, or other mechanical devices; dispatch or fleet management; or emergency or life-saving purposes.'
The language effectively bans much of the third-party software that might exploit the iPhone 3G's new GPS module, which could in theory be used to provide in-car or on-foot guidance beyond the static options present in Google Maps. The rules may prove especially frustrating for nav-unit maker TomTom, which yesterday told Reuters that it has already developed navigation software for the iPhone and plans to sell it commercially.
It is speculated that Apple may have the intention of developing its own real-time navigation software, but it has not announced any such plans to date."
Could the iphone running iGo8 (as shown in the videos on youtube) be an unlocked phone? If so, how does that factor into the above quote? |

I guess the unlockers never bothered to read the license agreement.
Technically it should be really easy to recompile Navcore for the iPhone. It's the same ARM processor architecture, and it the same *nix OS (ish). _________________ Lutz

from memory, the solution we saw at cebit did not use iphone software per se.
it was a gps receiver with built in software on the actual receiver (NOT on the phone) and it used safari to access it via http.
