I am about to venture into the Apple Mac world by purchasing a new iMac Desktop and later on a MacBook laptop. Is there anything I need to know about using Home and any other downloads which will be of use. I see the sticky about the Mac, but wanted to know about any other members advice and info that will be of use.
(I will be keeping my Dell desktop and laptop just incase it goes wrong.) |

Nothing at all really. You need an alternative .zip utility to the built-in 'archive.app' to extract our databases, I use Stuffit Expander (it's a free download) and there is a Mac compatible v2 HOME app although its just as cr**py as the PC version
I'm a Mac convert having run an IT consultancy and so specialising in Windows PC's & Server's. You won't look back! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Darren Thanks for that. I have just had a 2 hour input at the Apple Shop in WestQuay, Southampton. The staff there were very helpful. So its off there next week to part with some spare cash I found under the mattress. I saw about the Mac version of Home 2, at the moment I have kept all older versions and switch between them. The info on Stuffit Expander is great thanks. I expect other members may add some more useful at a later date as and when they log in.

I recently upgraded to an iMac from my MacBook Pro, the laptop is great but spending 12hrs a day looking at a 15" screen was very tiring.
Now I have the expanse of a 24" screen and it's pure bliss! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thats the question 20" or 24"......So that it is easier to move around the house, we are opting for the 20" with wireless keyboard and mouse. A beautiful screen in either size.

A wise choice, I had to lug mine from the Apple Store in London and handn't considered how heavy it might be .... and it's a lot heavier than you'd think! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Just a word apropos migrating from PC. I absolutely hate the Bluetooth wireless mouse - somewhere like £50 and it's so slow. I've always had my PC mouse set to quite fast and the Mac Mighty Mouse is hopeless in comparison. To my shame, I have to admit I sneakily borrow Vera's USB mouse, not least because I am also too dumb to remember how to right click on the one button Mac Mouse! _________________ Dennis

Andy I have to spend my £10 Lottery winnings on something geeky.
DennisN I'll give the Mac Mighty Mouse a go, if I can't cope, I have a Tesco Technika USB optical mouse which works fine. |

If only I'd known - there's an Apple dealer just up the road from you in Guildford. The guys there are very helpful and there's parking right outside
The 20" and 24" models are both great, but I think the 30" cinema display is just a little too large for 'normal' use - although probably great in a film studio or something _________________ Andy

Mine was an impulse buy, I had been intending to upgrade at some point. But I wandered into the Apple Store after a press launch event in London and the rest is as they say history!
Who is the Guildford outfit, might be worth knowing? _________________ Darren Griffin |

I agree. In fact I've never used Windoze in my life. I have 3 Macs at home and 3 at the office.
Regarding the Mighty Mouse, after you've used it.......as Darren says.....you won't look back (although the scroll ball tends to clog now and again. Nothing that can't be mended with a few drops of alcohol and some vigorous scrolling). |

I've got a wireless mighty mouse on the MBp and never got on with it, it keeps losing the right-click function meaning I have to power cycle it to restore each time it happens.
On the iMac I have a wired mighty mouse and this has been excellent.
Having said that, MikeB has the same wireless mouse and never had an issue so perhaps I have a duffer! _________________ Darren Griffin |

I preferred wired keyboards and mice (mouses, rodents - whatever the correct term is) because you know that they're always connected and their performance is possibly marginally better that the wireless ones.
The wireless keyboard and mouse is smart though because you can check the battery level from the System Preferences and you get an on-screen warning when the batteries begin to die _________________ Andy
