|

Wondered if anyone could help...
I have a Garmin i3 that has stopped working...
When I switch it on I get to the startup screen and then it says loading maps and stops there...
I put the card in a memory card reader and plugged it into my PC and it wouldn't recognise the card....
I put the memory card of a second i3 that I have in the same card reader and it worked fine so I assumed the card was at fault for the first units problem...
Contacted Sandisk and after going through a few things, Sandisk tell me it sounds like the card is faulty and needs replacing.
I buy a new memory card and copy the maps and everything from the second units card over to the new card and of course it doesn't work because you can't do that, the maps are locked...
Anyway I rang Garmin this morning. First person tells me that "just because it isn't working, doesn't necessarily mean its the memory cards fault" and tells me to do a master reset which he e-mails me the details for. Try the master reset and of course it doesn't make a difference...
Ring back Garmin and speak to some idiot called Ruth. After trying a few things that don't work she tells me that I need to send the unit in for repair which will cost me £££. Its not the unit thats faulty I say, its the memory card... "Oh no its not the memory card". I tell her I have diagnosed a faulty memory card with Sandisk and she tells me "Well its nothing to do with Sandisk, I deal with these things every day and I know more than you and Sandisk"
At that point I had to put the phone down before I exploded.....
Can anyone help me proove miss up-her-own-arse wrong.....
I need some way to get working maps onto the new card that will work. Anyone got any suggestions?
Cheers |

You could try purchasing a map upgrade. It'll cost $75US (so about £40).
This will come in the form of a free CD, but the unlock code is what you pay for. If you're using I3's with SD cards, my guess is that you've got V7 or V8 maps, and as Miss "I know better" is asking you to pay, the units must be out of warranty.
As I've also got a GPS V that came with mapsource (full europe V6) I've used to to load Europe maps onto a spare SD card, up until I purchased the upgrade to V8.
You can unlock two units with the same code, so you should get update maps for both |

they have recently changed this policy and it only covers a single unit.

I thought I read somewhere on these forums that Garmin have withdrawn this facility, and that an unlock code can now only be used on one unit.
I'll try to find the relevant post. _________________ Anita

do you have a back up of the original card on the PC and the original card, if so format the card using the PC then re-install your back up to the original card, it should now work unless the card is in fact U/S
The map is locked to the original card so puchasing a new card will not work without activation, the cards ID will be different - Mike |
