USB connection/detection and poi sound

Hi, I hope someone can help with this. I have tried Garmin but the message seems to disappear into a black hole or something and never gets answered.
I have a Nivi 310. I have the mapsource citynavigator Europe installed on the computer and a 1gb sd card in the nuvi. when I connect the nuvi to the computer via usb the g start does not detect it. The poi loader works ok as does the web updater, but I have tried to install the TTS voices from garmins website and when they extract the updater does not detect the nuvi. I have installed the USB drivers from Garmin.
Any ideas ?
Also is it possible to change the alert sounds made when approaching the speed camera poi's. I can harly hear the "ping" that it makes, my mates tom tom does a loud claxon type warning which would be much better.
