BT388/TT3/ipaq3970 TTFF

Replaced my TomTom original BT GPS recently - it couldn't receive signals through my windscreen (Renault Laguna 2001 reg) - with a Globalsat 388 unit. Yes it can pick up GPS signals through the windscreen, in the glove compartment, in the centre arm console (which the TT unit could not) - but - the time to lock on to satellites can be several minutes, even when trying to lock on after only a short break (i.e. working day, restarting from last location). Ideas, suggestions?
