Hiya,
I'm looking to buy a Garmin Quest, European Edition (or possibly a Quest 2). Whilst looking around on the net, I found this shop to be the cheapest.
http://www.aspidshop.com/export/store/product_info.php?cPath=&products_id=156¤cy=EUR, it's called Aspidshop. I believe it's a shop in Portugal. They'll send it to any place in Europe within 24 hours. (Total price at this shop: €474.32 incl. TAX, shipping €18,- Total: €492,32)
Anyone happen to know even a cheaper shop?
Thanks alot
P.S. Anyone with any experience using this GPS in General Aviation? Any way to upload Jeppesen navigation software on this GPS???? |

I have seen Aspidshop mentioned here a few times but I have never dealt with them. Check out some of the retailers that advertise on this website, they offer similar prices and are probably a better bet if you are UK based (purchase protection under UK consumer law etc). If you are in a country which uses Euros as your currency then you might be better off going to Aspidshop.

As far as I know, you can't upload Jeppesen data into this GPS. Garmin do specialised GPS units for the Aviation market. If you are serious about using the GPS as a pilot then you should probably look at one of the specialist pilot GPS units.
I have used my Quest (as a passenger) in loads of planes. You can mark waypoints and route towards them "off road" and it will give you a compass or bearing pointer with cross track error, course to steeer, rate of climb, altitude, distance to next/final, ETA etc. You can create a route with multiple waypoints on your PC and upload it to the GPS and it will navigate you off road with a compass or bearing pointer. Some airport runways are accurately marked on the maps (LHR, LGW, STN etc) although there are a few odd ones - Luton doesn't have a runway marked but Biggin Hill does.
The biggest downside to the Quest 1 (vs Quest 2) is that it doesn't support POI alerts for use with the speed camera database. I understand that the Quest 2 will have this feature (which may or may not be important to you). _________________ Gone fishing! |

Hang in there, the Quest1 is due to be replaced by the Quest2 and the new StreetPilot i3s are selling like hotcakes. It looks like the price has crashed (or will very, very soon) to about £200. 8O

Yes, my understanding is that Garmin will activate the City Select product for up to two Garmin GPS units owned by you.
The Quest for £200 is an excellent deal compared to the StreetPilot i3. It comes with the full City Select Europe rather than just the UK and a load of features that Garmin have left out of the somewhat dumbed down i3 (no disrespect intended to i3 owners!). The only drawback is the lack of POI alerts.

So, does this mean that a man with two GPSes will never be quite sure where he is? :P _________________ Gone fishing! |

Thanks for that info Skippy. I have phoned Pc world Dixons and currys and none of them list a Quest in their system at any price let alone sub £200 so the ones for this price that have been mentioned must be the odd few left in some stores,or as I hope is the advanced guard of what is to follow

Thanks alot for the replies. I guess I'll wait a bit then, hopefully the prices will drop further toward X-mass.
I live in The Netherlands, so I am looking for a unit that of course also has all the streets, etc. over here.

So far, what I've seen, the price difference between the Quest 2 and the Quest 1 is quite big. You guys think it's worth the extra few hundred Euro's just for those few differences between the two?
And is it perhaps possible to take the US Quest 2, and put the European maps on it. Or will there also be a difference in the amount of memory in the US version vs the Euro version? Coz from what I've seen so far the US model is alot cheaper! |

Robert Elsinga has an excellent page with loads of information about the Quest at http://www.elsinga.net/home.html
The Quest 2 supports loading proximity alerts (ie for speed camera alerts) but the Quest 1 doesn't.
The Quest 2 has all of the Europe maps loaded but the Quest 1 requires that you select an area and load the maps you want to use.
Rough map sizes are:
Benelux about 100 Meg.
Germany about 300 Meg
France 225 Meg
UK + Eire 155 Meg
You can load selected areas of a country. For example, Benelux is made up of about 90 maps and you can select the ones you want, plus a few from France, Germany etc.
You CAN buy a USA Quest but you only get 115 Meg vs 243 Meg and you would have to buy City Select Europe maps which are expensive and this will probably cancel out the saving you make on the USA model. Get the EU one...
I don't think it's worth paying extra for the Quest 2, but it depends on how you use the unit and if the speed camera alerts are important to you. If you do a lot of long distance driving to lots of different areas and you don't have a PC with you then you may find it tedious to have to reload the maps frequently. _________________ Gone fishing! |

Thanks for pointing to my website Skippy. :D The direct URL is http://www.elsinga.net/questfaq (the above one is pointing to the welcome page ;)).
And, the Quest2 also seems to have an optional 3d navigation display. I hate it, but some TomTom users might love it.
I will pick up my Quest2 in a few hours, so keep an eye on the website for detailed info. :D _________________ Robert Elsinga =8- )

One USA website I looked at today claims that the Quest 2 will not allow routes to be constructed on a PC - do you think this is way off the mark? |

In Europe, the Quest2 will have the City navigator v8 NT included, so routes can be created on the PC. In the US, the Quest2 didn't have the DVD included but you can get it from garmin if you just ask for it, as it seems. _________________ Robert Elsinga =8- )

Am I right in thinking that CN has much more detailed mapping than than CS, especially of countries such as Spain and Norway? |

All the Canary Islands are now covered in detail, as are the Balear Islands. I have not noticed improvements in Norway (but I could have missed some), nor in Eire. The Czech Republic has improved coverage, but not in large area's.
If you aren't going to Spain, this update is of limited value IMHO. _________________ Robert Elsinga =8- )
