I noticed the 2 popular topics pinned to the top of this forum asking for map errors and missing places (to which i have contributed a few posts), was wondering how likely these are to get implemented and has tomtom ever issued new maps?
Just curious as i find the ppc+ttn2 solution to GPS/SatNav really brilliant.
Cheers

As far as I am aware, they were amended last when TT changed from version 1 to 2. Will we have to wait for version 3 and pay extra money again...??!

I had an interesting chat recently with someone from the navigation software industry. He explained the complexities of buying in map data from Navtech, TeleAtlas etc.
Basically a very large proportion of the money you pay for apps like TTnav and SmartST etc goes straight towards buying in the map data. It's a huge cost and explains why regular free updates are impractical.
Once the map data has been purchased it needs to be compressed to fit in a PPC environment and any unnecessary additional data like kerb heights etc removed. Unlike a fitted DVD based solution where space is not an issue and this additional fettling is not required. This compression and modification takes a long time also.
Updates for factory fitted systems where available are very expensive, £300+ for an update CD/DVD is not uncommon. Given the above, even if updates were available would you be willing to pay 70% of the initial apps cost for a map update? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Fair enough response there Darren...
I do hope they continue to make the navigator software more effiecient and feature rich...i know its a complex mechanism and it does a great job...very impressed with the solution....
I bought the ipaq and software (did already have the road angel) for the same price as a Garmin StreetPilot 3, which is a nice bit of kit....but i do get the added functionality of having an iPAQ too!!!
Keep up the good work!
