I am an articutlated lorry driver (Import/ Export Containers) & I bought a Garmin 2610 from Maplins in March as a secondary/ backup system to My Laptop based Navigation system
running Infomaps Navigator 4.3. I have only used the 2610 occasionaly since I bought it, but I was forced to use it exclusively for 3 weeks this month because the DVD-Rom needed replacing in my laptop. Although I found the navigational qualities of the 2610 adequate, The features I really missed was the audible speed camera alerts, & Low bridge POI imported data, which I are features of Infomaps Navigator 4.3.
In IMO for Garmin/Maplins to sell the 2610 for £640+ without the ability or cabability to import data such as the above is criminal.
Would I be right in saying that the 2610 is the ONLY navigational aid on sale at present that does not have these features?
Does the i3 have have the capablity to do the above & does it operate via a 24v DC lighter socket? With a mere £200 price tag, I would consider getting one after selling my 2610.
but who would buy it?

Sorry I can't answer all your questions, but I can tell you yes it does have a 12/24v cigar lighter plug. _________________ Andspenka

Rudeboy - don't know about the 2610, but the i3 does do all the things you ask. You just need to download the camera PoI & the low bridges one (both available on this site I think). It comes with a cigarette lighter adaptor (sorry, don't know the voltage) or else runs on 2 AA batteries. Hope that's helpful. |

yes it has the ability to download low bridges and give you a warning but will not avoid then and will not show then on the map either also you cant browse the map you must put in a destination ie you can not move around the map and then select a road to navigate to ill be using in the truck next week to see what its like _________________ currently using aponia truck navigation on windows phone. Good bye IOS don't let the door hit you on the way out .

it runs off a 12v cig lighter adaptor that converts it to 5v - not sure if it would work on 24v though?
as for low bridges, you can set up the i3 to say you are a truck which will keep you off minor roads - are there many low bridges on main roads still? you could always set it up to give proximity alerts of about 1mile (i think the maximum is 8,000feet?) which will tell you when there's one nearby regardless of whether or not it's on the road you are on. i've not seen any low bridge poi's though so can't help you with that.
if you did reach a low bridge though and you took a differnt turning instead (are low bridges usually signed up?) it will recalculate the route very quickly.
hope that helps a little bit!

Badger Garmin about this. I am sure they can retrofit this feature to the SP and Quest GPS units if enough people (politely) badger them about it.

There's a low bridge PoI on the PoI download page - you'd just have to convert it to .CSV for the i3 |

Thanks all for your help
8O I Went into Comet today & saw a Street-Pilot i3 in real life, My initial reaction is that the screen area is too small for serious use.
The Street-Pilot c320 looks about the right size, but its twice the price.
Reading alix776's post has made me think twice about purchasing either unit untill I am sure that they can do exacltly what I reqiure.
I was thinking that you could -:
1. Import bridge POI data.
2. Assign a icon or graphic to the data (so you could see the data on the map)
3. Click on the POI icon or graphic on the map to get more info.
4. If the route calculated went via a bridge icon or graphic that was to low you could block that bit of road and recalculate untill you get the route you desire.
Generaly regarding POI' s, I was thinking that you could see a graphical representation of any data that you imported. & avoid roads that you did not wish to travel on.
Am I correct in thinking this is not the case?

I think you can do 1 and 2, but the other two are doubtful.
The name of the POI may include some information about the POI and with the POIs that come with the map data it has phone numbers but that is as much as you get.
Some Garmins have "Avoids" which you can configure and it will route around them. I don't know if this model does.
gazthomas is right, £200 for a fully functional sat nav system is incredible value! It wasn't so long ago that you would pay that much for a bluetooth GPS receiver and you had to buy a PDA and £150 worth of software to go with it! _________________ Gone fishing! |

no, it doesn't - not that i've found anyway. you can set yourself as 'truck' which will keep you off small roads, not sure about low bridges though |

Garmins use of the name "Street Pilot" in the name of the i3 & c320 series of Navigators
does tend to imply that they are an upgrade from the old Street Pilot series.
Street pilot 2610 can do steps 3 & 4 (with internal POI's & roads) so it seems that Garmin have given some features with one hand & removed some features with the other.
alix776's post confirms this.
What is needed is a Unit that can do everything that the Street Pilot 2610 can do + every thing that the i3 & c320 can do - as one item. A true upgrade! I would not buy a newer model of a car which took a retrograde step regarding features,(look what happened to MG Rover)
Yes! £200 is a Bargain, but if it can't do the thing's you need, Whats the point?
I will look out for a proper upgrade to the Street Pilot series &/or take my hard earned cash & buy hardware/software that will do exactly what I require, regardless of manufacturer.
- Garmin take note.
