How does TMC work in the UK and Who pays for it?
I see that Navteq have are listed as having a liscence on this website fot iTMC http://www.tmcforum.com/en/about_tmc/tmc_services_today/united_kingdom.htm
Does that mean if you have Navigation software and hardware that supports TMC that as long as you use navteq maps you can receive TMC alerts for free in UK??? |

iTIS were until recently the only TMC provider in the UK. Now TrafficMaster have a licence to operate a competing service.
They make their money by charging for access. Each vendor of apps that can access the data pays a licence.
The fact that Navteq have a UK licence means they can sell their map CD's direct to customers with TMC access but it does not follow that every vendor of apps that use Navteq map data also have a licence to do likewise.
Hence Navigon who use Navteq and have TMC Data in Europe have not purcahsed a TMC licence here. Typically our TMC data is far more expensive than in other parts of Europe. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Some companies build this charge into the cost of the maps, and others don't.
If your hardware manufacturer has a license with iTIS, then it's likely that you can buy (more expensive) maps with TMC data on them to then receive the information at no further cost.
If you go to www.navteq.com and select map updates you can select your setup and see if TMC disks are available. |
