I am new to the world of GPS and have been driving all over central and eastern Europe since June but have yet to understand this speed camera business. I do understand that this seems to be a big thing when Driving in Great Britan but, if I ever do get a chance to drive there, I will be so focused on driving on the left side of the road, I doubt very much if speeding will be an issue. Reading your summary on camera types, it appears as if this is an automated way to ticket you for speeding.
Do these systems exist in other EU countries? If so, which ones? Do they offer any latitude between the posted speed limit and the "ticket issuing speed"?
When you install the speed camera database, does the GPS then alert you that a speed camera is up ahead in time? How far away do they record speed?
I really would appreciate a basic primer on this subject. I don't make it a practice to speed but with the frequent move up and down of limits I have found on German and Austrian highways, it is easy to overshoot from time to time.

Other countries have camera systems, but not as extensive as in GB. There has been up to now a 10% allowance, 33mph in a 30 limit, but there is some evidence that a zero level tolerance is starting to creep in.

The database alerts you to the fact that there is a camera ahead, and in some cases indicate a speed. Different navigation systems use either distance to camera, or time to camera which is based on how fast you are travelling.
Most fixed cameras have pre-defined distances. Gatso take a picture of the back of the car as you pass the camera. Truvelos face you and take a picture of the front, but you are very close to them. Temporary cameras are usually of a Gatso type.
Mobile cameras have a long range and are used in an elevated position, a ramp or bridge, and can easily trigger at 800 metres.
Redlight cameras operate at Traffic Lights and are triggered if you cross the light while it is Red! _________________ Richard
