Can anyone tell me how the unit calculates distance travelled when the route is not flat? Does the unit record distance on the ground (actually measuring the up and down distance on hills etc.)or as the crow flies? Is the Odometer distance calculated any differently from the track distance? If not why do I stll get the different readings on the Odometer and Track distance at the end of a route? I am on software version 3.8. |

I might be wrong, but I am pretty sure it calculates the flat distance as the crow flies.
The odometer updates every second but the track log might only log a point every 10 seconds. This means that the track log sometimes cuts off the corners and makes the tracklog distance shorter.
Anyone else with any theories on this? _________________ Gone fishing! |

Have you tried altering the track recording and interval settings in the (Tracks menu )over the same piece of ground to to what variation there is ..if any... BTW version 4 software is now available

Thanks for the responses. I now think:-
1 The GPS does measure linear not up and down distance and in any case the effect of say climbing 2000meters over a walk of 30km is quite small.
2 The effect is due to the difference between the sampling frequency of the Odometer (1 per sec) and that of the Track Log.
I have tried a short circular walk with the track log set at 75 meters and then at 1 second intervals. The former gave a large discrepancy as expected over the small (500meter) crcular walk. The latter gave the same figure as the odometer. |

I have also tried Garmin for the above but no reply. Not even an acknowlegement so I am not impressed with the after sales service. Has anybody had similar service? Perhaps Garmin need a wake up call from their customers. |
