|
|
Hi as the title says can anyone with experience of one recommend an 8GB SD card that will work in a 520 with no issues please? I've got mobilnova and want to convert a load of my DVD's onto the car to watch in the car. |

Mike, if you would not mind posting the full specs for that card. Since apparently the TT's are pretty finicky about the cards that they accept and the whole SDHC issue.
I don't necessarily see the 'Class 6' when looking around.
Darn thing is not sold in the US from what I can tell.
Thanks. |

Have a look at This Page as it defines the card spec and manufacturer quite well - Mike |

(apology if cross-posting is bad!)
Just for information:
I just purchased a PNY 8 gig SD HC card. It works in the TomTom920
And...
Using a Card Reader I formatted the card and moved about 5 gigs of stuff to the SD card.
TomTom seems to see everything when using Media and I've also got a Video Player installed and that is now playing Fantasia. So the TomTom appears to be able to access these files.
BUT, big BUT.....
When hooked up to the computer, using Windows Explorer, the SD's properties show up correctly - size and used/free space, but I could NOT write anything additional to the card. When I tried moving another folder's worth of music it said something about "wrong parameters."
Now whether the HC would make a difference I don't know.
I will now see what happens with more functions.
I'll add a bit more info:
Someone in another forum mentioned a 4gig limitation for the CARD for Fat32 which triggered this and more:
I'm not sure that is the case with Fat32. I believe the drive can be larger but that NO ONE FILE can be larger than 4gigs (or whatever that magic binary number would be).
Windows offered to format the drive when it was in the TomTom and, yes, you are right - it formatted it as 4g. But when I placed it in a new card reader then went to Manage (under My computer) and checked the STORAGE module, the drive showed as larger and so I REFORMATTED it and it offered 7+ gigs. I've now copied approximately 5.5 gigs to it and I _THINK_ I can access those gigs when in the TomTom. The way I'm testing is to see if stuff I added later is accessible. The last album I added was Jefferson Airplane (can you date me with that reference?!!!) and it is playing fine (other than it plays in alphabetical order rather than TRACK order).
Now it could take a long time for me to try each and every file but I think that they are there. At least, I hope they are.
While I would wonder if this is some inherent limitation or merely the way TomTom programmed the unit, it would seem if it can find the files for playing as mp3's, that there should be a way to get around this limitation???
Just my observations. |

Dan, it is typical for CPC to use one image for multiple items that look the same, there is even a note on the page that the image is for illustration purposes only, if you click the tech spec link you will find it is indeed a Class 6 card - or try THIS page to go straight to the spec sheet - Mike |

I've never been sure why people are so keen to re-format their new cards before they use them?? They come ready to use...
In other threads I've seen it reported that the standard Windows formatting routines were never designed to format SD cards properly and that you need specialist software such as this one from Panasonic:
http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/sd_formatter.html
Never used it myself, but it seems to know what it is talking about! |

Lovely....
But what do you want to do with it?
There's no technical details at all, but it's probably SDHC so it won't work in any TomToms except the x20 models. |

Mike, one more question (for now )
When connected to a computer (usb) Can you access that card FULLY while inside a Tomtom either using Windows Explorer or TT Home?
As I noted above, I can use the 8gig card from PNY inside the TomTom920 and get the various files stored there but canNOT see if fully when the TT is docked to the computer. It needs data loaded from a card reader.
Thanks. |

As the card details don't quote any technical information such as read speed it is very difficult to say whether it work reliably work or not, I guess Tesco's have a decent returns policy though if the devce refuses to boot with that card inserted? - Mike |
