Well tested then
I wonder how many unit returns they've issued as part of the standard script ? _________________ Satnav:

Really not an issue unless all the advice on pretty much every forum to make a full backup wasn't followed
No different to your PC really, back it up as one day you might need it. Someone on TV this morning moaning because her laptop had been stolen and she'd lost all her photos, music etc. No excuse really with memory of various types so cheap these days _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Hopefully that means that the new GE will replace if the DEM is missing - or is it only that in future updates the DEM file will not be deleted?
We shall see..

A quick question for sussamb. Does my Garmin Zumo 590 use the same DEM file?.
I have managed to restore the 3597 thanks to lillyelse. Before adding the DEM to the Zumo I just want to check it uses the same file. |

Not sure whether the Zumo 590 uses a DEM file but if so it should be the same.
Edit: it does so copying it across should work _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

I must disagree.
I paid Garmin a goodly sum of money for a unit and lifetime map updates.
The responsibility should not fall on me to make a backup but rather on Garmin to supply a thoroughly tested software update that does not delete a file that is needed for my unit to work correctly. |

I don't disagree with that, just that if you have a back up you'd be okay. We pay those who make computers for us but we still back the data up, if we're sensible, just in case something goes wrong _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

MichaelCahill wrote: | The responsibility should not fall on me to make a backup | 'Should' is the operative word here. It should not be up to you, but unless you take the advised precaution of doing it 'just in case', when the 'just in case' happens, it's you who takes the hit. When the device is up and running, learn by misplaced reliance on others and do a full Windows backup in mass storage mode with hidden and system files visible. Then you'll be OK next time 'just in case' happens
@suss.
You are of course correct about backing up our data, but we don't usually have to back up the OS as well. Having said that, I have followed the wise advice and have several disk images of all my Windows machines 'just in case'. .When one of my computers came up with the rather perturbing announcement "No operating system found" (or similar), I just restored my disk image and bobs your uncle. How many times do you see on TV where someone has had their lappy or phone stolen and berates the thief for stealing all their irreplaceable photos? It's their stupid fault for not having at least one backup. |

I agree
As far as Windows goes I have a two pronged attack. I have an external HDD permantly plugged in and another external HDD, not plugged in. Both are 1Tb so plenty of room for my needs.
I use the free version of 'SyncBack' (by 2 Bright Sparks) to perform regular daily scheduled backups of all my data to the connected HDD and a manual run to the non permanently connected HDD on demand. I cannot recommend SyncBack highly enough. It is a superb program that backs up each area you tell it to at the frequency you tell it to and it takes care of the situations where the PC is off when a schedule is missed by doing it next time it can. Some data areas I backup hourly whilst others are one or twice a day. And it is super quick as it only backs up new and changed files if that's what you tell it to.
I do also use the Win7 built in backup full shadow copy routine monthly but I'm not sure if that would recover from an OS failure. I have read of many instances where TrueImage has taken a full image, verified it, but when needed in anger has failed so I don't use that any more. In my case if I had an OS failure I'd probably reinstall from scratch. So far though, never needed to do that this millenium. The failed to find an OS was usually linked to a full HDD where critical Windows files on shutdown could not be written. _________________ Satnav:

....I wrote back giving the info again step by step more simply, and got an answer giving me a case number, and asking me to send them the log files from GE and the GarminDevice.xml file (with instructions how to do that). Today I have emailed the xml file but the GE log file was 35MB, which my email refused to handle, but luckily was able to send it using "Send Reports" option in GE.
So I am awaiting their reply.
They did not mention anything about the DEM file being combined with another, or anything like that, which hopefully they would know about (?)
Will keep you updated when they answer.

So far nothing from Garmin....

Tried out new version of GE (4.1.28.0) to see if it replaced the missing DEM file. Sad to report it did not mention DEM file as an option, and reinstalling the maps did not bring it back either.
lillyelse, would you please send me a copy of the DEM file now you have a method of sending it? Thanks in advance. I really do miss the 3D effect. _________________ Dabri.

At the risk of repeating my post on the GE subject, confirm the DEM file was not replaced on 3598 either.
Still waiting for answer from Garmin support.
