I have had a TomTom for some years now, and am considering switching to Garmin. I have my eye on the 3590LMT.

TT has "Quikfix" technology; one can download the positions of the satellites for a week in advance. I do believe that this helps in initially acquiring the satellites - which is its function.
Does Garmin have a comparable feature? I don't see any sign of it.

And if anyone has any feedback regarding this model, I’d love to have it.
The device isn't cheap, so I want to be sure about it before purchase.

Can't comment on the 3590 but my Garmin 1490 and 1310 both acquire satellite lock before I'm out of my driveway. So whatever they use isn't 'slow' Smile

Further inquires regarding Garmin vs. TT:

I visited a shop yesterday, and played with the 3590; it's a beauty, and, basically, I want it.
The salesman told me something, however, that has made me re-think getting a Garmin.
He said that, only lately (perhaps with this model) did Garmin overcome the fault of not distinguishing Autobahns from national highways (here in Germany).
In other words, if you told the device to avoid Autobahns for a route, it would also avoid these national highways, too.

This "feature" would have been an absolute deal-breaker - had I known about it.
If I had purchased a Garmin earlier, and found this to be the case, I would have been a very, VERY unhappy camper.

Is it, in fact, better to have a European-centric device from TT - rather than a US-centric device from Garmin?
Could (are) there other features that TT would excel at because it is based here in Europe?

Of course, Garmin works - and works well - here in Europe; I acknowledge that.
I just need a bit of reassurance; my feet are getting a bit cold!

Don't know about Germany but everything works in France, Spain and the UK ... I also frequent various Garmin forums and have never heard about the problem you mention ... that's not to say it never existed but if it did it's sorted now I would have thought as Garmin are pretty quick at releasing updates when there are major issues like that.

I was totally shocked at the salesman's statement, you can be sure. And - of course - I don't really know if his statement is accurate.

It's hard to believe that Garmin could have let that one get by - at all, or for so long.

Sounds like salesman's BS to me. And, as Garmin now own Navigon, they can't really be accused of being US centric.

Can you not have a 'play' in the shop and set up a test rout with the different parameters to see if it does what he says it does.

In every other thing the salesman said, he was convincing me that this new unit - the 3590 - was a great product.
So it wasn't as though he was trying to sell me a TT - and steering me away from Garmin.
Can't quite figure it out.

Have you any feedback regarding the 3590? I've read a review or two.

I haven't used a 3590 but I've liked all the recent Garmin's that I have used. It's more about whether you like the Garmin or TomTom user interface really.

If the product performs well, whatever difference there exists between the user interfaces of TT and Garmin is secondary.
They probably both have their pros and cons - regarding interface and other aspects.

On a TomTom, when one "updates" a map, the old map is actually deleted - and a new one installed. In the process, ones "favorites" are deleted.
Now, I've learned how to handle that - but wish to know what the situation is with the Garmin (3590).

Are favorites deleted during a map update?
And if so, how to get around that?

I've just had another play with the unit at the shop. It's so nice! The screen is wonderful and responsive. I find the actual interface to have pros and cons vs. the TT.
