I'm a new TTG customer and am confused as I'm not receiving a gps signal at all despite being in the middle of a city.

Are you supposed to activate the device first? I'm using the standard SD card that came with it (bought new from Amazon).

Telephone support to tomtom is non-existant and there is no mention of this problem anywhere i've looked. I'm not impressed so far can someone tell me where I'm going wrong?

Thanks

Might be something shielding the signal, like the heated / reflective windscreen. If it is, you'll need to invest in an external antenna.

Tiuch the right-hand bottom corner of the screen (where the sat number indicator is). On the next screen touch the right-hand top corner of the screen, the GPS Status screen will appear. What do you see on this screen?

Mr Ploppy - I have no signal at all whether indoors in my house, outside or in my car driving around so I don't think the heated windscreen is the issue?

Eldar - on the GPS status screen it says no valid GPS signal and no numbers at all in the different fields on the screen.

I'm at a loss to know what to do - is the machine faulty? I'm running version 4.42 and this is the latest version on the web for downloading isn't it?

Thanks for your help so far.

Cheers

give it and around half an hour hour in the car turned on but the car MUST be stationary while you do this so it can get a fix if you still havent got a signal then move it to the back of the car if you get a fix in the back of the car then you have an athermic windscreen and youll need an external antena

OK Alix776, I'll give that a go thanks.

Excuse my ignorance but why does it have to be set up in the car only to get a gps fix? I've got it on charge in my house, turned on and set up - why shouldnt this work??????

Cheers

because gps receiver needs a clear veiw of the sky to recieve the sattelite data if you inside the house it will show position unreliable or no gps signal also some double glazing is heat reflective and this can also effect the strength of the signal received

Just found this on the tomtom web site - why isn't it made more obvious inthe set up instructions? Am I the first personto have fallen foul of this?

"To acquire a first GPS ‘fix’, you have to expose your TomTom GO, fully charged and switched on, to a clear sky. A first GPS connection can take up to 45 minutes*.

I'll post back if successful or otherwise!

You'll be unlucky if the first fix takes more than 10 to 15 mins.

Just took the TTG for a walk up and down my road and around the park for 30 minutes and no joy.

I also left it on in my car earlier today for about 30 minutes with no joy but then turned it off. Maybe i need to wait longer or try this external antenna route?

I'll give it even longer tomorrow and report back but I'm anxious to get it working or have it replaced if its faulty.

Cheers everyone

The first time I left mine on the roof of the car for 30 mins. Sat listening to the car radio - good excuse.

It worked like a dream.

Is the clue in the first post . "I am in the middle of a city"
The sats could be shielded by high buildings. TTG dosn't work like a mobile phone.

I would be very surprised if the first (out of the box) fix takes more than one minute under the clear sky conditions, it might take a bit longer in a built-up area, but thirty minutes seems to be excessive.

cheggerz: find the reset button (on the bottom side of the unit), get a paper clip and reset the unit. When resetting keep the button pressed for about 15 seconds.

Success!

Thanks Alex776 I ran the battery down overnight and charged up this morning, took it outside in the garden and after about 20 minutes my TTG had locked onto about 6 satellites. I had to go out then even though it was still looking for more sats - I hope that isnt a problem, it was working fine in the car.

Thanks everyone!
