|
|
AS we know, TomTom has some really strange ideas on route calculation, especially for us HGV drivers.
After an unbelievable day yesterday with TomTom wanting to send me down all manner of back A roads - its piesta de resistance being to send me off at J8 on the M11 to go round Bish Stort and minor A roads to Harlow even though I was already on the M11 and where I wanted was 1/2 mile off J7, I started playing with the speed limit settings for classes of roads in the advanced section, trying to find a balance between a decent route calculation and some degree of accuracy for journey time.
Here's what I've got so far which seems pretty on the ball:
Motorway 56
International Rd 56
Major Road 47
Secondary Road 40
Connecting Road 40
Important Local 34
Local 25
Destination 25
Seems to be about right. If you've any you've tried yourself, please post them here. |

Good work, Conor - hopefully other LGV drivers will be able to benefit.
My understanding is that you're working with TomTom Navigator 3, not Navigator 2, and it's worth underlining that. Though the settings are the same in Navigator 2, the routing algorithms seem somewhat different in Navigator 3; with the same speed preferences you get different routes between the two programs, even when the updated maps in Navigator 3 make no difference.
You may want to back off all the speeds by a few miles an hour - I notice that you give 56mph for motorways, which is, of course, your speed limiter speed. This will potentially lead to over-optimistic times of arrival. There again, sensible routing is the most important thing - ETA figures are always at best a guess.

Thanks to Conor for the suggested speeds - will try asap.
Recently I tried to get a definitive statement from TT about how they relate UK road types to their own internal catgegories. The upshot of it was that I didn't get an answer despite much probing. In the end the most intersting statement from their support group was that :
'Our software was designed for use in an automobile .....some caravans might be too large to be considered an automobile...'
I read this as meaning that it isn't suitable for large vehicles - even my 20ft MotorCaravan is too large. When I questioned this they connected this to the problem of lorries and low bridges but I think the problem is greater than that.

Hi
Nice ideas about the speed correction....
I have a TomTom Go.....and it aint possible to alter the speed settings at all.....
I have emailed tomtom and voiced my disgust about not having this basic feature.....but it aint done me anygood.
As for route calculation on it.....it seems to be pretty good.....so far it has pretty much selected the route I would have taken myself.

I tried something similar, I have found TT3 will take you in one way and sometimes bring you out another way. I still have a manual check as I don't trust TT3. |
