Is that a definitive 'No', or is it a 'you shouldn't do that type No'? |

Sorry to labour the subject sussamb, but exactly WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE bertwem The Europe DEM file recently deleted by Garmin, and the Basemap NR 5.01 DEM file that exists on all Garmin devices?
Why use two (2) DEM files when ONE (1) DEM file would do?
If they are both Digitally Enhanced Maps or modes, why delete the Europe DEM file only?
Clearly, the Basemap DEM file 5.01 does NOT enhance the terrain.
So, why call it a DEM file when it clearly is NOT.[/u][/b] |

Well now I'm confused. You mentioned a file with DEM in the name, and the DEM file is the Digital Elevation Model that exists on some Garmin devices. The basemap on every Garmin device isn't a DEM file. On the device the basemap file is gmapbmap.img, the DEM file is gmapdem.img
So there aren't two DEM maps. Where did you get this info from:

"Basemap", and this is referenced as;
"Worldwide Autoroute DEM Basemap, NR 5.01" dated 08 / 2011 "courtesy of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminstration / National Ocean Service 2011"

Precisely.
Confusing isn'it?
On the 3598 device, from the main menu screen, press SETTINGS, Down Arrow twice, DEVICE, ABOUT, Down Arrow once, then touch BASEMAP and you come to "Worldwide Autoroute DEM Basemap, NR 5.01".
Try it.
What is the DIFFERENCE between this DEM file and the Europe DEM file deleted by the last update 2017.20?[/b] |

Ah ok. That is the basemap, and it does have some elevation data but like the map it's very coarse. If you zoom 'way out' on models that have just that basemap you will see some shading of terrain, but nothing like the detailed data from the gmapdem.img file. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Thanks for the explanation sussamb. Like you say it's confusing.
Wonder when we will get Garmin to re-instate the Europe DEM file for 3598 owners and users?
I understand their need to generate profit through sales, but resorting to bully-boy tactics is certainly not the way. |

Well I don't expect it's that. Just an error in Express. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

All gone quiet from Garmin, so sent them a reminder that I was still waiting for a reply:
1] By replying to their previous email answer Nothing happened
2] Copying the same message into their Web support page Got following reply
MY MESSAGE:
Case No: xxxxxx
Dear Chris
As it is now over two weeks since our last communication when I sent you the requested log files, I am enquiring about the situation regarding this case, as I have not received any reply from yourself or anybody at Product Support.
My thoughts:
a] There is no need to carry out a major investigation on this matter. (*)
b] During the last map update process for map 2017-20, Garmin Express deleted the "Europe DEM" file ("gmapdem.img") from the ".system" folder, and it was not replaced. As you know, the DEM file is the digital elevation data file that shows the terrain, it's only used by certain models, such as my Nuvi 3598.
c] Last week, there was an update to Garmin Express. Hoping that the error had been corrected, I reinstalled the 2017-20 maps, thinking that the DEM file would also be reinstalled. However, this did not happen and the DEM file was not reinstalled.
d] To correct this error, all you at Garmin have to do is put up a link either in Garmin Express or on your website, where users can download the required file "gmapdem.img"
e] Garmin then has up to the next map update to check out Garmin Express to correct whatever the error was in the first place.
Thousands of your clients must have been effected by this, as you will see from various GPS forums on the internet.
I await your early reply.
Regards
THEIR REPLY:
Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.
I am happy to help with your query.
The case in question is still being investigated. Our teams will update you on the state of the case as new information comes to light. Thank you for your patience.
Apologies for the inconvenience.
If there is anything else I can help you with then please let me know. Alternatively you can search for a solution here: http://www.garmin.co.uk/support
Kind regards,
Thomas

*OK, a] was a bit tongue in cheek
I have a suspicion that they will soon announce that older units no longer have this DEM facility.
Though I say thousands must have been effected, I wonder how many keep track of the updates and probably still do not realise that the file is not there.
Are they still offering this DEM view on their current new units?
Perhaps it is time to consider mentioning this to some motoring/computer magazine or correspondent or even to "Which?" who gave Garmin a good write up?

Most nuvis don't have a DEM map ;)
Anyone though who has a backup or who can get the map from elsewhere will be fine, when Garmin will resolve it only they know. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |
