I have a folder named D166000 on my Garmin but it seems to be contain .glx files. Assuming that this is not the file mentioned, where can I get a copy of the DEM file to put back on my device? I ran GE but it didn't give an option of downloading such a file. |
Contact Garmin, they should be able to provide it. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Now, after the update, only two entries are visible, NTU Europe 2017.20 and NTU 2017.20 3D.
Otherwise everytning works as normal, even 3D buildings.
Thanks in advance |
I have the same situation as above.
The DEM file is missing after the update. Also missing from the SD card.
Checked my 3598 and followed sussumb's advice.
Also reinstalled the maps by GE, but no change.
Any thoughts?
Regards |
Did you ever make a backup? You should be able to copy the DEM file from a back up. |
I did backup my 1690 after your advice on cloning to the SD card but
unfortunately for my 3598 I only used GEs backup option which only backs up user data.
To my cost, did not follow advice in your various previous posts.
Will try and contact Garmin, and see what happens

I'll wrap it up in a folder and email to interested 3598 owners if they get in touch. There is an accompanying "gmapdem.sum file", but I dont think it will be needed.
Must stress that although I've got the DEM file installed in the .system folder I haven't yet tried it out with this Full Europe 2017.20 map update. Will do that this comming weekend.
Looks as though Garmin have tweaked the 3D bit of the mapping, maybe to eliminate the Europe DEM file but time will tell.
Cheers. |
I have sent you a PM. Thanks for the offer. |

You're right M8TJT. Forgot about the 300Kb limit, although I have sent files over 350Kb in the past without problems. Suppose it depends on your service provider.
Nevertheless, if any 3598 owner wants a copy please PM me and we can try the email route first. |

So a bit more on this. When I connect to Basecamp I get two maps shown as being on the device.
City Navigator Europe 2017.2 NTU (on memory card)
CN Europe 2017.20 3D (internal memory)
Looking at the 3D map this is a replacement base map with the contours and altitudes combined.
At a guess, Garmin have combined the base map and the DEM map with this latest release.
I have emailed support and i am awaiting a response. I will let you know what they say...... |

Well that's an interesting take on it. Have you though looked in the .system folder on your device?
I would expect to see a gmapbmap.img there, which is the basemap. Also you should see a gmapdem.img, which is the DEM map.
Are they both missing?? _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

A quick look in the system folder shows gmap3d.img gmapbmap.img and gmaptz.img
Only the gmap3d.img was updated by Express so it looks like the elevation is in the actual map. |

So the basemap is still there. Will be interesting to hear what Garmin say then about the 3D and DEM map. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

That's what I guessed earlier.
The only way to tell is to check if the 3d buildings are there regardless of the missing and/or changed files. _________________ DashCam:

I contacted Garmin and got an answer within 2 hours!
I had explained that I had installed the maps, saw that the DEM file was missing and despite reinstalling again, the file was still missing. I requested if I could be sent a copy of the file.
All their message was, was a standard instruction how to reinstall the maps using GE.
I wrote back giving the info again step by step more simply, and got an answer giving me a case number, and asking me to send them the log files from GE and the GarminDevice.xml file (with instructions how to do that). Today I have emailed the xml file but the GE log file was 35MB, which my email refused to handle, but luckily was able to send it using "Send Reports" option in GE.
So I am awaiting their reply.
They did not mention anything about the DEM file being combined with another, or anything like that, which hopefully they would know about (?)
Will keep you updated when they answer.

I got a similar reply and sent on the two requested files last night.
Further developments are awaited. |

An update to the discussion.
I have just returned from a trip to Port Eynon in South Wales after re-installing the Europe DEM file in my device and the difference between having NO DEM file is nothing less than astounding when travelling in areas of high intensity changes in terrain.
However, I may be wrong here, but some 3D buildings appear to have been selectively highlighted, where they appeared to be fairly uniform previous to the Full Europe update NTU 2017.20. Why do this? Who decides subjective highlighting of particular buildings?
Two areas where this is evident is in SE 17 London and central Birmingham.
Has anyone else had this experience? |

Garmin support have now acknowledged that the DEM map is gone in latest EU update. Appears it is an Express error that will be resolved in a new Express version out next week. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |
