This year I was visiting again but couldn't get Google Maps at all unless I was in a wifi hotspot. I now know that I can download maps but I'd like to know why I could get the maps without downloading or having data enabled 14 months ago. |
Did you browse the map while on wifi? When I was in Holland a few years ago I used the hotel wifi to scroll round the area at different zoom levels - this cached those tiles to the device so I didn't need data.
However, on newer phones and in recent years they moved away from map tiles and use vector mapping so both of these may have had an affect.

Having updated Google Maps on 13th I was very pleased to discover the tile size increase and promptly downloaded the whole of the NW with took the best part of 400mb however, I have today had a warning that my off line tile is about to expire and needs updating. Whilst it's great that I now get a warning, what is not do great is that the off line data lasted just 5 days before renewal was needed
Edit: The new data says that it expires in 29 days so maybe the above was just a glitch? |
Maybe they expire on the 17/18th of each month as opposed to after so many days on your device? |

Google Maps/Navigation has never shown current speed or road speed. |

That's a shame - and rather invalidates my earlier suggestion that it would be good to integrate Google Maps offline navigation with CamerAlert so that cameras would be shown on the maps like they are with PNDs. But if it lacks some of the basic features which other navigation apps have, there wouldn't be any point. _________________ Roger
