|
|
“Voice Alerts Garmin.”
The one thing that irks me more than ever on the Garmin is the persistent “bleep” which only diverts ones attention to the screen. No indication of “Camera ahead 30 miles per hour” .... Moved over from TomTom.
I have downloaded the “ Garmin POILoader [UK - Consolidated By Type (Gatso,Mobile, etc) | pMobiles: Yes | French: No | Swiss: No ] (12.092 - 10 Sep 14)” which includes all MP3 files. I have tried to Google whether Garmin 3598 supports MP3 files but to no avail.
Copy the extracted .mp3 voice files to the POI folder you use when uploading POIs to your Garmin device.
Ensure you have ALL the POIs you wish to upload in the same folder including the correct version of the speed camera database that matches the voice pack type i.e. speed zoned.
Launch POI loader as normal, this will package the POIs AND the voice files and upload to your device. No further action is necessary.
The downloaded file pgpsw-speed-cams-BjfrI-(12-092) contains all the mp3 files plus *.bmp and *.csv files.
Is the instruction above “Copy the extracted .mp3 voice files to the POI folder you use when uploading POIs to your Garmin device”.... it sounds like one has to “cut or copy” mp3 files and load up separately into the POI files within Garmin. Do I read this correctly?
Thank you for your help.

I wasn't aware the .MP3 works with the latest units.
Try .wav and you'll need to get an old version of SOX.exe
Plenty of tutorials here and a link to the correct version of SOX _________________ Satnav:

Hi Kremmen & friends,
Try as I might I cannot get my new nuvi 3598 LTM-D to play an alert in any format other than the repetitive and monotonous bleeps that's programmed into the unit by Garmin.
I've tried all variations in the following format, plus others too. ie.
Crown_Carvery.bmp
Crown_Carvery.csv
Crown_Carvery.mp3 or with these other extensions:- wav or ogg
Even with the Sox.exe application in the route POIloader folder, and the Sox.exe asking for permission to run when using a wav file, NOTHING.
For reference, the nuvi 3598 LTM-D specifications on the Garmin website says it does not have the following:
"Mp3 player or Audio Book" capability, so there lays a clue.
Whether the 3598's inability to play the audio files identified above is due to its hardware not being compatible, I don't really know. However, if it's just a software upgrade which is needed, I would ask Garmin to consider such as the 3598 unit is in the upper price range of their Sat-nav range, and should at least be specification comparable with the competitions (TT etc ).
For what it's worth, my years old TomTom 25, which I've replaced with this state of the art Nuvi 3598 LTM-D, was capable of playing 'ogg' format audio for alerts or customer created and designated POI's.
I would obviously welcome any comment or feedback on my observations.
Cheers,
John in the UK
Ooops, forgot to mention that I tried GeeePeeex program too |

This may be a stupid question, but you are using WAV format files and not just renaming them?
I have a 2598 and never had a problem. |

You must download and use the WAV files only for audio to work, without these then no go.
remember to make sure they in the same folder as the speed camera files and they follow same naming convention |

Hi Allan,
I use WAV format audio files. Not just renaming them.
I use AUDACITY software to convert them to Mp3 and Ogg formats for trying too.
The bitmaps flag up on the 3598 map as per their 'csv' Lat/Long data but no sounds from any of the said mentioned audio files.
Cheers for replying,

Hi walkerx,
I've done exactly that and as shown below.
POIloader places them on the 3586 internal storage area and within the POI Folder there, they are also combined and converted to a single "Crown Carvery.gpi" format by the POIloader.
Crown_Carvery.bmp
Crown_Carvery.csv
Crown_Carvery.wav
I have not tried them on the 3598'S SDHC 8Gb MEMORY card yet as this holds the updated extra 3.8GB of MAP data files for the UK and Europe and I'm unsure whether that may get corrupted by non map data, even in a specifically created POI Folder there
Cheers for your help, any other suggestions are welcomed

Map data won't be affected by POIs also being on the card should you wish. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Hi sussamb,
Cheers, do you reckon I should create a specific folder on my SDHC 8 GB memory card named POI and transfer the three:
Crown_carvery.bmp + Crown_Carvery.csv + Crown_Carvery.wav into it without conversion,
Or should I use the POILoader to dump them onto the 3598's INTERNAL memory first in their combined and converted Crown Cavery.gpi state and thereafter transfer them to the 8GB SDHC after using the PC.?? The big unknown for sure, I know.
For reference, as you know the POILoader program itself nominates the destination folder / memory area of which I have no control.
Cheers, please RSVP

I keep all my POI on the device itself. Either will work. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Hi sussamb,
I do that too, and they all work fine, it's just that I can't get the 3598 to scream any 'WAV' audio or such as alerts. That's a bit anti-progressive for sure.
On my OLD TomTom 25 it was done with ease
Cheers,
John |

Apologies but I never bother with that, however do you have the correct sox.exe version, as some apparently don't work correctly. Once that's sorted it is apparently easy to do what you want.
Hopefully someone here with more knowledge than me can point you in the right direction.
I assume you've read this?

That link contains it all including a link to a good version of SOX.
I would have thought by now that POILoader wouldn't need a third party tool of a certain vintage but hey ho _________________ Satnav:

Another stupid question! The Wave files do have sufficient volume don't they. When I moved from the 1690 to the 2598, I had to increase this so they could be heard properly.
Given that I have never had a problem and nor have the other people on here, it should be something really simple e.g. this or directory etc. |

I think the problem is that POI loader is meant to load POIs, and to work with the older Garmin devices that use mp3 files, it's not designed for the purposes some folks want to use it for
This from the POI website
Except for our basic handhelds and older Rino® two-way radio GPS units, all of our current Outdoor and Automotive products are compatible with custom POIs. Tour Guide POIs are only compatible with our MP3 capable nüvi® and zumo® units. Please check your particular Garmin model’s spec sheet for custom POI compatibility
