|

Garmin have just released virago, a cheap navigation application for iOS and Android. With a price tag of $0.99 in the Apple AppStore or £0.59 in Google Play this sounds like great value for a Turn by Turn navigation app.
Of course this is too good to be true and the real cost of the application increases with the available in-app purchases. These range from $4.99 for urban guidance to $9.99 for on device mapping. Add a few of these up and you get a figure of around $40 for a fully featured navigation application. Still it does allow you to select the features that you want to fit in your budget. It is perfectly possible to work with just the base app, but if you are wanting to use it for serious navigation then the costs do mount up.
Having made that statement the standard Garmin USA app is priced at $49.99 so using virago and the mix and match in-app purchases may give you what you want at a price point to suit your pocket.
The application will download the current map data from Internet servers unless you have the maps stored on the device via an in-app purchase. This generates a hybrid navigation solution that will allow you to buy maps for your holiday destination enabling you to use the app without having any additional data or roaming charges. Back at home you can browse maps, search addresses and POIs anywhere in the world when you have an internet connection without incurring charges.
The app is available now on Apple AppStore https://itunes.apple.com/app/garmin-viago/id853603997?mt=8 at and Google Play at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.garmin.android.apps.viago . _________________ Mike Barrett |

Is it really available in the UK
Couldn't find it on the Apple App store for ipad (v3) or iPhone (4S) and the Google play store says not compatible with any of my devices and that is quite a few devices including HTC One and Samsung Tab 8. Presumably its not UK ready yet only USA? |

Is it Viago or Virago or even Viagra? #justjoking
I have Garmin's Navigon on my iPhone 5S but house numbers in a street aren't very good. I need accuracy as a First Responder for the Ambulance Service. In fact I find Apple's own maps app with directions more accurate for this purpose in my town (Helston, Cornwall). #strangebuttrue |

"This app is incompatible with all your devices".
I have:
Samsung Galaxy S3
Google Nexus 10
Google Nexus 7
All running standard Android.
So, what is a "compatible" device?

The Garmin site points here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.garmin.android.apps.viago
... but it apparently is not compatible with any of my devices (Samsung Ace, Hudl)
I run the TomTom app on both of these devices - it seems to work fine. The only issue is unfamiliarity in that I have several generations of Garmin Nuvi so I'm more familiar with the Garmin UI. |

It allows you to put in multiple via points... although I have only experimented with that in principle. I have not actually travelled anywhere using that feature yet. |
