I need to get to a location in the forest, the "co-ordinates" of which are given on a Web site. I've found this location in Google Earth. But, clearly, the systems used are different. And my TomTom and Garmin use another system.

Is there a way to "translate" either one of the two above co-ordinates to the system used by our devices?

Web site: N 47.58.13 / E 008.43.38
Google: N 47.58.13.aa / E 008.43.38.bb
(I'm using aa and bb because there is simply no way to be precise, in this instance. I cannot tell exactly where the person "was standing" when the location was marked.)

But - as I'm sure that you know - the devices seem to use another system. They need numbers of this form:
(x)xx.xx.xxx

Can I get from one to another?
Thanks.

Try www.nearby.org.uk.

Select Coordinate Conversions Only and enter the coordinates you have. Decimal, Dec Min and DMS will be returned.

You can change the degrees, minutes and seconds in a TomTom under Change Preferences - Set Units.

Press Done until you reach Coordinate Display. Then Select the Option - Seconds.

In Browse Map, under Find and Latitude Longitude, input the co-ordinates as N 47058'13 and E 8043'38 (Note I can't do a Superscript 0 for degrees, but on the Input screen you'll get then idea).

On my TT, it shows as Lindenhof, West of Tuttlingen. Is this correct?

Thanks for your (quick) replies. I'll be trying the solutions soon.

@Richard,
Yes, the location is the seminar house Lindenhof.

So:
I found that the easiest thing to do was to change my preference in Google Earth to show the on-screen co-ordinates in Degrees, Decimal Minutes. That seems to be the format that the devices use: xx.xx.xxx

Didn't know about that pref in Earth.

Thanks for your help.

Ahem... cough cough... And what's wrong with using our own conversion tool?

I'd forgotten about that. Rolling Eyes

I couldn't find a link to it, in the Page Tabs. If it's not shown, it's easily forgotten about. Shocked

Sorry, MaFt, I don't remember ever hearing about it. Embarassed

Now bookmarked. Very Happy

Although it's easier to just paste the complete coordinates into the webpage I linked to than to type the numbers into the six boxes and select north/south and east/west on the PGPSW one!
I'll get my coat.
Out of here
