Tomtom isn't affected like cameralert is because they use a simple login for hd traffic and as you can only log in once at any one time, they aren't affected.

Of course you can move the subscription between devices if you change phone model or switch to the iPad for instance, but these are time restricted and can only move subscription between current and new device once per day off the top of my head.

Because cameralert needs a unique identifier per device, this login method doesn't work a MaFt has just explained.

Would it somehow be possible for a trusted third party, Apple even, to hold a escrow database of permitted device IDs? Might even enhance their contribution to the Patriot Act!!

Apple aren't there to provide a service they exist to make money, Why would they change their Modus Operandi for CA?, what's in it for them?.

So if TT will probably work why can't CamerAlert use a similar mechanism?

Because TomTom are already flouting the rules. Or, rather, they've not been given the same hoops to jump through as we were. For example we were forced to allow subscriptions to be used across all a users devices. BUT TomTom traffic etc can only be used on one device at a time. If you log in on another device then it logs you out of the other.

I can only assume that Apple have been lenient on other things too.

For me, the ability to have a working CamerAlert is paramount to having the ability to use it on more than one (Apple) device. So limit it to just one, please. It's not as if you'd be doing anything all the others aren't. AND, when you first introduced it, it was one iOS device only.

It's not our choice. Apple state that it must work on ANY device owned by the iTunes account holder - otherwise it gets rejected.

I'm new to iOS so please bear with me

If I did wish to upgrade my device to iOS7 could I not look for a cheap iPhone 3G, say, and run it as a standalone CA system without a sim?

Without a SIM you don't get the map (data download on the hoof).

Quite so, but if mapping is not required and iOS 4.2 will run CA this might be a workaround for some. I currently and effectively run CA on a Touch (with a BT GPS)

Yes. That'd work.

MaFt, here's a suggestion, I don't know it it will work:

When an iOS user starts CamerAlert, CamerAlert contacts the PGPSW server an asks for authentication (done from knowing user-id and password) a marker is added to that user-id on the PGPSW server and CamerAlert sent a unique authorisation code to allow it to run.

Should another iOS user start CamerAlert with the same user-id and password then during the authentication at the PGPSW server will fail and CamerAlert will show an appropriate message, i.e. "Your details are in use on another CamerAlert at the moment"

When the original user ends CamerAlert then CamerAlert contacts the PGPSW server an asks for the marker to be removed.

You would need to have a manual function to release the marker just in case there's a problem with the phone.

The system allows people to share their details of CamerAlert with trusted people as only one person could use it at a time.

You could even also increase the number of markers allowed per user-id so that a family could use the same user details on multiple devices, say up to a maximum of 3.

I know that it's not ideal and that you would need a robust server system.

Just a thought.
