My card has arrived
So what is the best plan of action please. Do I:
1. Use a 'file copy' action to copy all the files from the TT hard drive to the cardwith the card in a reader? Then delete the files on the TT.
or
2. Delete the files on the TT and put the card in the slot and run a 'restore' routine from TT Home - will it put it on the card by default?
or
3. nearly do 2. but do the restore then delete the files on the TT drive.
or
4. Do 3. and don't worry about deleting the files?
or
5. Do something else - what please?
I assume I also need to format the new SD card - via Windows using standard default or 32 bit specific formatting command, or in some other way please feel free to educate me.
Many thanks for all help rendered |
The card should already be supplied formatted ready for use.
Copy all the files from the device to the PC.
Copy all the files from the PC to the new memory card using a card reader.
Remove the files from the TomTom internal memory.
Insert the card and switch the device on.
It will now be forced to use the card.
PS The quote above was posted in to a different forum question so I thought it better moved to here - Mike |

OK, I got as far as:
The card should already be supplied formatted ready for use.
Copy all the files from the device to the PC.
Copy all the files from the PC to the new memory card using a card reader.
Remove the files from the TomTom internal memory.
Insert the card and switch the device on.
It will now be forced to use the card.
The TT booted and then came up with 'No maps found'
I'm currently copying the files back to the device just to be on the safe side - I experienced a slight stab of 'I hope I'm doing the right thing' when I first clicked delete on the TT files when doing the above, but it seems to function as a hard drive and I think it will work again when the files are back although it takes a while.
Errr.............what shall I try next? :-D _________________ TomTom Live 1005 world maps |

At least the device is reading the card as it must be booting from the card if you wiped all the files off the device.
Map activation issues can often be cured by running the "Clear Flash" utility which you can download for free from the TomTom web site click Here run this at least three times, I appreciate it doesn't appear to do anything but it is known to cure the issue you have with the device then try the files on the card again - Mike |

I think I'm a failure
I can't make that flash utility work. I've tried the exe, the zip, run then as administrator. I'm now back to installing the old files back onto the TT unit itself. I can't even get it to accept the card anymore.
I think I'm hitting give up with it. Which falls into damned annoying as I don't often let IT issues beat me. _________________ TomTom Live 1005 world maps |

Bit of a nightmare. I've been in tangles like that. The copy that you took to the PC to download to the card - is the map folder visible? _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

I would start again.
Connect the card to your computer using a card reader and format it. Copy a back up that you know worked to the card. Does Home recognise it as a device (you may need to disconnect the card and reconnect it)? If it does, can you Operate My Device in Home? _________________ Anita

What were you expecting to see?
It's pretty unexciting!
You just click on a few "forward arrows" (I think their instructions say click "next" or some other word that is nowhere to be seen!)
And after the last one you get a momentary flashing of the red cross graphic on screen.
That's all you see. |

Hi all
Nothing like a thread without a tie up is there. So with apologies for the delay here is the outcome.
FraserP got on the phone today, and encouraged me to have another bash - he had been chatting to a friend, and essentially the advice was similar. So in the finish I got success and for anyone wanting to know this is what worked for me:
You ultimately need to copy ALL the files from the TT unit to the card, including the old map that you have working. Leave the old files on the unit.
I found that the combined size of the existing files and the NEW full Western Europe map ultimately were (just!) too big for the 2GB Transcend card. The 4GB Platinum brand card was the one that finally worked.
The process that worked:
I hit the 4GB card with the Flash prog. (this bit may not have been necessary, but I did it anyway) and then used Windows 7 to do a full (unclicked 'quick') format of the SD card.
I copied all the files from the TT to a folder on the hard drive. Then I deleted mapsettings.cfg from the TT
I copied all the files from the hard drive to the SD card
I put the SD card into the TT and turned it on (no message to remove card - big hurray). To check it was reading from the card I asked it for a personal POI and they were there so it was picking up mapsettings.cfg from the card
Turned TT off, and fired up TT Home, switched on TT and connected to TT Home
Got it to check for updates - it found the new and complete Western Europe 1GB (now slightly bigger than 1GB of course which was the initial problem, but still called Western Europe 1GB). I let it do the download (2.5hrs - in the sticks out here at the end of the long copper cable to the exchange), then it said it was installing it to the CARD (Hurray). It's worth then going to your hard drive files and renaming Western Europe 1GB to 'old' somewhere else on the computer hard drive and then copying the new Western Europe from the TT into the directory (see below for reason why)
Following update of map, let TT reboot - card is accepted and new map is accessible. TIP - DON'T THEN EVER REMOVE THE SD CARD EVEN IF YOU TURN TT OFF - I found it didn't re-accept the card and I had to reformat and start again (this is when I thanked my lucky stars I had already copied the new WEstern Europe 1GB to the computer hard drive)
To check it was talking to the card I looked for the new Reims bypass which can be clearly seen to the SW of Reims.
So there we go a solution that worked for me. Many thanks to all helpers that pitched in - I guess I'll update the speed cams tomorrow as it's getting late now _________________ TomTom Live 1005 world maps |

Hi cash_13
I regret to announce a bounce of this somewhat depressing saga.
My One XL snapped off one of the base connectors. After searching the net and finding prospective repair bills of around 70 smackers I phone TT support.
Firstly the good news - their support and repair was second to none. Within 24hrs they had sent a purpose made box and pre-paid special delivery Royal Mail bag - this cost them £8.16 for my return - I know 'cos the post office gave me a receipt with the cost cancelled. I posted off the unit, within 36 hrs a package arrived back by special delivery in a simiar special packaging box. I had freely told them out of warrantly repair - my fault - I'll pay!! They have returned a brand spanking new One XL unit for NO CHARGE - Plus One to TT I think!
However, it's a brand new system - I kept the SD for the old one at home with all the maps on.
I've updated the OS on the TT as they instructed using TT Home, managed to link the new device to my old details on TT Home after a bit of faffing with the software not recognising things and a bit of chicken and egg scenario. I haven't so far tried installing an updated map on the system as I can't see the need to and I'd only be able to fit a map section onto it. However
YOU'VE GUESSED IT, when I put the SD card that I got working above in the device it tells me:
Problem with map
You cannot use this map on this device: Western_Europe _1GB
If I hit continue it then says
Select a map Western Europe 1GB as only option if you select it you then go back to Problem with this map in a loop.
Not wishing to scramble a brand new device I'd welcome suggestions on what to do first based on my last experience with this.
Many thanks
Julia
New TT says on base:

The map(s) from your old device are locked to the old device and cannot be used with the new unit .
Maps are locked to the device they are purchased for, unless they are maps pre-installed to an SD card by TomTom and sold by them, in this case the map is locked to the memory card Secure ID and can be used in any device - Mike |

Ouch!!
Then despite TT Home re-allocating all its settings and all the things I've bought to the new device and being happy to do so, it looks like I am reduced to loading up maps on the new unit and starting from scratch again with the SD card. In a word "%^&&*!" _________________ TomTom Live 1005 world maps |

OK, so I think I'm a bit further forwards.
To begin with I took copies of every thing that was on the new TT device and chucked it into a folder on a computer. I also did the same with the existing contents of the SD card from the old machine, just in case I lost anything useful.
Then I deleted the contents of the SD card (because it didn't work if I just overwrote any files that were reoeated and left others). I then copied the contents of the new TT folder to the SD card, and put the SD card into TT. This time when I switched it on it didn't holler about the wrong map.
I then finally let it run TT Home (which had been a right PITA until that point insisting on firing up with every single sight of either the TT or the SD card which it thinks is a TT and needed several task manager shut downs so it didn't update anything until I was ready). TT Home then offered me the necessary map updates that I had previously bought for the old device - the rights to which it was happy to transfer to the new one - it does some clever things once you get it all talking to each other. It then stored WHOLE western Europe 1GB onto the SD whilst in the TT
Now where do I stand with mapsettings.cfg please? I am assuming that this was also tied to the old device, as despite copying into the correct folder the new system isn't seeing it.
Is there a way round this or do I count mapsettings.cfg as collaterol damage and generate things from scratch. Which will include my POI's and PGPSW camera files and voices (mucho work there). Cheers
