As the title says, I'm having problems formatting a 2gb Kingston SD card for the Tom Tom one new edition (4N00.005).
BTW, why can't we attach a jpg to a post, it would make explaining any errors so much easier, as some can't be cut and pasted, but could be screen grabbed and attached here, I've had to use an online ocr to post the error message further on
I have successfully formatted it in explorer, not sure which FAT it should be so went with 32.
Put card in TT as instructed by Tom Tom online help.
Memory card reader
Before you can use a memory card reader to install a map you need to insert the memory card in your navigation device. Switch on your navigation device and wait for it to boot. You get the error No map found. Turn off your navigation device. You can now connect your memory card to HOME using a memory card reader.
Turned on, Home loaded it tried to load maps, then I got several errors for the card, I have since re formatted it and fixed the errors.

I also have another problem with POIs on the SC card, I have copied them into a PC folder before formatting so I can get them back later, I tried to use POIEDIT to do my wishes, but I must be thick as I could not get it to move poi files from one place to another, it seems fine for renaming or changing co-ords, but maybe I'm missing something.
I have my POIs sorted into separate categories for each country, but some were on the card, and the rest are on the TT, both categories are named the same, I'd like to get them all into one category by country as before but with the contents of both, I was good at knots at school
Hopefully some of that lot makes sense, I sometimes give too much info, if unclear please ask and I'll try to give any info you need.

Er.. you can. We do it all the time.
You have to store the picture file somewhere on the web ('Photobucket' would do the job if you don't have any webspace of your own) and then use the {img] tags to link to it. The images DO show in your post if you do it like that.
What you can't do is upload the image directly to PGPSW forum servers. That's down to the way PGPSW have set up the forum and probably also down to the antiquity of the board software in use.

Was there any particular need you felt to re-format it? All SD card come ready-formatted to FAT32 (which is correct for a TomTom).
People often ask how to format a card before they use it in their satnav, but unless there's a problem with the card, there's simply no need, it will work straight away.

OK.. In that case it WOULD be wise to try a reformat.

The card worked fine for a few months then started to act up badly in the end I took it out and just used the on board memory, this is the same card.
There's always the possibility the card is just faulty. There are lots of very good-looking fakes around. Do you have another you could try?
I plan to back up TT to my PC, then use restore it to the card using home, I'm sure I used explorer last time though, maybe that's why I had probs.

Use POIEdit to edit and merge the POI files, but it's easier to just use Windows Explorer to move them to where you want them.

In POIEdit, open the first file you want with the menu command "File/OPEN", then add the other files with "Open/APPEND". When you have them all loaded, use File/SAVE AS... to resave the POI file with a new name.
Don't forget that you CANNOT have your POI files left in folders once you put them back on the TomTom. All the POI files need to be placed directly into the named map folder you intend to use them with.
So if you want to keep them seperate, you'll need to name the files in a way that mentions the country, such as "Chemists_France.ov2".
But I'm not sure why you would want to keep them separate like that though... Even if all your Chemists were in the same POI file, the way the TomTom sorts them will always show the ones nearest first and you can still search through them all alphabetically to find a particular one.
(That last point is not quite true on the new Go100 and Via models) _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-)
Your reply is a bit hard to fathom (it'll be me ).
I'll go through it if I may.
Jpg attaching,
I don't have any images stored online, as it's a bit too techy for me, so not sure how to get around that one.
Formatting the SD card,
I did it because it kept crashing the Tom Tom, so thought it best. would it be OK to try again now it's sorted, I got a 2gb just in case it ever needed to scrub some space of due to errors, even though a 1gb might be enough.
POI problem,
So From your reply, I can just use (I wish they still called it file manager, much more descriptive than explorer) explorer to open the ov2 files and move them from one cat to another, or have I misread that.
POI moving to different categories, "you CANNOT have your POI files left in folders once you put them back on the TomTom." (that bit I knew I just didn't make my question very clear, sorry
I do it because when I'm in the border country, I want to see POIs for that country alone, I literally have hundreds, and it just makes it easier to pick one.
On the subject of POIs and Tom Tom, When I open up the fuel stop category to pick a one I tend to use find nearest, (obviously) the list shows which is nearest, but is there any way to show which direction it's in, as up in the wilds of Scotland or anywhere remote that could be critical, I do try to find them on my atlas, but sometimes the names Tom Tom shows are a bit "unusual" and not on a map, otherwise it's, pick one, and use Tom Tom to show me which way it is.

OK... quite a few questions there... lets start at the top.

I started writing some step by step instructions, but then thought they may be of use to other people too.
So I turned them into their own topic. you can read it by clicking here.

OK, that's fine. I was just pointing out that a lot of people seem to think you must always format a card before you use it in a TomTom, and you don't.

POI problem,

Sort of right, but not quite...
Firstly, you can use Windows Explorer to do all sorts of moving, copying, deleting of any type of file, but it doesn't necessarily know what to actually "do" with them.
So it cannot "open" them itself.
In just the same way, Explorer doesn't know how to open a Word Processor document. All it knows is that if it sees a file with ".doc" at the end of the filename, then it needs to ask your word processor software to start up and to read the file.
In this case, if you install POI Edit or a similar program, then it should tell Windows Explorer that *it* knows how to open the TomTom POI files with .ov2 at the end of the name, so when you try to open one in Explorer, POIEdit should run and take over from there.
The confusion starts if you don't have a program for some particular file type. If that happens, Windows just says something along the lines of "I don't know what to do with this!"
Secondly, you don't " move them from one cat to another" as you suggested.
A POI category (Pet Shops, Argos Stores, or whatever) is a single .ov2 file, and it's filename will be "Argos.ov2" or whatever.
You can't move stuff from one file to another with Explorer. That's where POIEdit comes in. It's great for splitting or merging POI files into different ones.

If you have a route planned, then there will be some icons next tot he fuel stations, showing how far off your route they are. A blue straight up arrow means it is right on the route, and a green "bent" arrow means it is not too far off. Then there are one or two yellow "bent" arrows, for ones rather further off your route.
That's about all there is to tell you, although of course you can got the the "Browse map" page and centre the display on your current position (using "Find" - "My location") then if you have that particular POI category set to show on the map ("Options" - "Choose POIs") you will see them all displayed around you on the map. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-)
When you said use explorer it didn't occur to me that you just meant to open the ov2 files via an association, and bearing in mind my difficulty with POIedit which other programs might be worth a look.
So Sorry Andy for not replying, for some reason all notification emails went into my spam folder, and I didn't notice, I only just read you last message, and I can't remember what the problem with POIEdit was as it's so long ago.
Right now I have the SD card from the old TT1 and I'm about to integrate all my created POI files into the later TT1.
I have backed up both the card and the device to my PC, I'm going to download one of the programs you suggested and see what I need to do, hopefully it'll just be a drag and drop of one POI file onto another, if not To quote Arnie "I'll be back"
All I want to do is move the data from one poi file to another, I have some pois on the Device and some on the SD card, both files have the same name, but I can rename one of them, but how can I move a point from one file to the other.
I'm usually quite computer literate but I just can't get my head around this POI thing for some reason.
.......but how can I move a point from one file to the other.
If it is just one POI you wish to transfer, I'd suggest doing it using the TomTom itself. Go to Map view, zoom into the location and "Add POI".
If it is several locations, I'd use a program such as GpsBabel, convert both .ov2 files to .csv files, import them both into the same spreadsheet, sort the data and delete the duplicates. Save as a new .csv file and use GpsBabel to convert back to a single .ov2 file.
I'm sure that there must be an easier solution, just not sure what it is at the moment though. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

I managed to finally get my head around it at last.
I looked at the other programs, but didn't like the look of any of them so decided to download POIEit again
I opened the saved SDcard POI file, located the one I wanted to keep, opened it, then opened 1 by 1 the other files I wanted the date from, and simply cut and pasted the data into the other.
Saved the file, reopened it in POIedit, then went through, using Googlemaps to show the positions, and it all worked fine.
My next problem is that these are all wild camping places, and my memory being what it is, I do tend to forget what the places were like, or the type of terrain they are in.
If I can get a WiFi signal it's OK, but even then it's only a map to look at tit tells me very little other than the location, which the Tom Tom will do anyway, just a smaller screen.
What I could do with is having it link to satellite data instead of the map, but couldn't see how to do that, so nearly there but not quite, am I missing it, or is it just not there
... What I could do with is having it link to satellite data instead of the map, but couldn't see how to do that, so nearly there but not quite, am I missing it, or is it just not there
I'm not familiar with TT1 nor PoiEdit, but what do you want to link to the satellite data (phone, TT, LapTop?) and what data would you like to get from the satellite? I'm guessing that you are thinking of embedding a hyper-link into a spare data field to download a Google-type satellite photo of the site?
I just want to be able to look at the area of the POI co-ords, which could be 2 to 3 years later to see what it looks like as I have well over 1000 POIs of places to stay, and a lat/long or a section of map doesn't tell me much, but if I could see it on Google maps in street view, or Google Earth.
TT1 is a Tom Tom one V4 with SD card slot, so I can run it like two separate device if needed, but I tend to just run on the SD card most of the time.
