A £1.2 million project will give speed cameras in the West Midlands a digital upgrade.

The new cameras will use digital cameras rather than traditional wet film meaning images can be processed immediately and they will not stop functioning when the 200 image film reel has been used.

The upgrade will focus on cameras in Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton.

Amazing how public bodies are prepared to squander millions of taxpayers money isn't it. I suppose they will also be powered by a nearby wind farm, generating its expensive electricity at taxpayers' expense.

Interesting - the last news we heard locally was that cameras in Solihull were being switched off...!

I have a compact digital olympus camera. One of its annoying features is the delay between pressing the 'shutter' release and the picture actually being taken. I expect the cameras used for law enforcement will be better, but I'm interested in what technology will be used.

But your camera has to focus amongst other things. Speed cams don't.

And the delay you experience is not common in mid and high end cameras.

But as M8TJt says, fixed focus point makes a huge difference to the speed and it might even be the case that they use continuous record where the system then saves off those frames that have been triggered by an over speed sensor.

I'll just add a camera to the list of all the other digital stuff I'll have to get next year...

Sounds like the system used here in France - so caller Radar - once flashed it is tranmitted to the local Gendarmerie who poist off the fine etc. No escape!
