Hi,
My Garmin nuvi 250 is about 2 years old and it is asking for the map to be updated.
I would like to update the uk and the europe map.
IS it cheaper to just buy a new device instead of paying the update fee?
Thanks |

You can simply ignore the update message, I understand eventually it goes away.
As for map updates, there are 2 schools of thought. Some (like me) never bother to update, others buy lifetime updates and continually update.
Are you finding that your nuvi gets you lost or the map is inaccurate? If so then log on to the Garmin website and see what they would charge you for an update, then decide.
If, like me, you feel your nuvi continues to work fine and doesn't seem to have any significant map errors, why bother to update? |

Hi,
Just updated my Garmin satnav with europe map update.
It says it has the following:
City Navigator Europe NT 2012.10 - Map only, Apr 11
How can I find out the countries it covers please?
Thanks |

Stick "City Navigator Europe NT 2012.10" into Google?
This came up almost straight away....
Even better, go to the Garmin site here and you'll find a link to a more detailed interactive coverage map on that page. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

during the installation, my device did not have enough space so it installed a smaller map version and would like to find out which countries are now installed. Also, it does not find the postcodes that it used to have prior to the update.
Any thoughts please?
Thanks |

That's surprising......
TomTom have started splitting their maps into smaller "zones" because of space/size problems (and got a lot of flak for it!), but that's the first time I've heard of Garmin doing the same.
When you installed it, did it give you the name of the zone it was installing?
Sorry, can't help with the postcodes, as I'm no Garmin expert. Hopefully one will be along soon.
P.S. I'm moving all your current topics to the Garmin forum section. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Map updates are continually getting bigger and are now too big for my nuvi 660. Usually I am told there is only room for GB & I. It is important to download ONLY to your PC and then transfer the map sections you can to your device using Mapinstall or Mapsource. Note that the space indicators in those programs do not work reliably and are always optimistic. I frequently get the message that the maps I have selected are too big to fit. I then have to deselect some map tiles and the PC then spends another half hour doing the necessary linking before moving it to the device.
If you select and then download you can find yourself doing multiple downloads which is very time consuming.
Remember that you can always download, say, GB and France to the device and then the rest onto an SD card. |

If at any time after a map or software update your nuvi doesn't work as expected the first thing to try is a hard reset, I suggest you try that first to see if it resolves the postcode problem. |
