I'm not 100% sure yet whether there are any specific speed cameras within the tunnel as yet, but it seems that the safety Taliban are up to their old tricks again.

Instead of having a twin bore dual carriageway tunnel for use at 50-60mph, we're going to be down to 40mph!

I found that out by having a look at the pictures on the http://a3tunnel.blogspot.com/ website.

So much of an improvement! Rolling Eyes

Anyway have a look at this one in particular, look at the roof fan on the top right hand-side of the picture, you'll find a CCTV? camera, just below it is a 40mph sign!

This to me suggests that there may well be a few hidden surprises within the depths of this tunnel. So when it opens in a few weeks time keep 'em peeled.

There seem to be cameras on the opposite side of the road as well?

As you approach from the south you can see that the average speed camera signs are already in situ.
Using the tunnel at 40 will still be a lot quicker than the old route, hopefully it should be open in july

I thought they were left in place from when they were there before (during the construction works)!

Actually I've just found a picture of them at the North end.

Look above the two guys in the centre of the picture, you can just see the little yellow boxes! Twisted Evil

Nice picture Wazza_G, but WAY to big for the forum...

Can you squish it down to the size above and repost please?

CCTV in the tunnel is nothing unusual. It's there for safety monitoring, to spot broken down vehicles etc.

The speed cameras are SPECS, I guess they'll remain to enforce the 40 limit. But why 40? That seems very low for a dualled tunnel that is relatively straight. It has a curve but a very gentle one. Unless those limits are just in place whilst construction continues?

As per my post in other section v870 maps seem to be using the tunnel as the A3 already.

I expect nothing less with TT's mapping. Rolling Eyes

Garmin's is correct so far, although they've missed a couple of alterations that were made a while back around the Lea Coach Road area, where the gap in the central reservation has been closed for safety reasons.

I'm now pretty certain that the speed limit is 40mph, which is ludicrous. Twisted Evil

If you look at the picture through this link, you can see a pair of 40mph speed limit signs on the slip road.

Is it a single bore tunnel? If so, a 40MPH limit is sensible. An accident in a tunnel is a tad more difficult to clear, and it will block both Nbound and Sbound traffic

If you look at the photos you can see that it is a dual bore tunnel

Ah, yes. I didn't see that one. Is there a speed limit through the Thames tunnels?

There is, but I can't remember offhand whether it's 40, or 50 which is the flyover limit; a feeling it is 40 though, as the older tunnel is quite 'bendy'.

Well hopefully, we'll get a definitive answer shortly, as I've sent an email to the HA enquiring what the speed through the tunnels will be under:

1: Normal/Free flowing traffic conditions.

2: Emergency/Degraded working conditions such as maintenance or accident.

I don't know how long it will be before I get an answer from them or even if I will get any answer from them at all.

But this has caused some very vociferous debate amongst those of us who will be using the tunnel on a regular basis.

As soon as I get the answer I'll pass on the information.
