Well, in my book, if someone arbitrarily decides that speed limits are arbitrary and can be ignored, then they ARE dangerous!

That's not quite what I said....

You'd be mad to ignore them, but I maintain a lot of them are set arbitrarily with no real consideration of the road conditions or safety factors in mind.

I'm sure we can all think of plenty of examples.....

You are right of course Andy_P, but the difficulty lies in deciding which ones might be arbitrary, and which ones really have a genuine purpose, unless you are driving through familiar territory.

But that purpose might not be just road conditions or safety. For example, I'm sure environmental considerations will sometimes weigh as well in the LA's decision, such as local community disruption, pollution, greenhouse emissions, fuel usage, all of which are likely to be worse at higher speeds.

Naturally I wouldn't dream of suggesting that another purpose might be, in a few cases, to assist in revenue gathering, with suitably placed cameras Rolling Eyes
