Hi there,

My first post so be gentle Very Happy Been a subscriber for a couple of years.

I've just had an e-mail come round at work - but have no idea how much truth there is to this.

*Be warned and be careful !*

*M1, M25 and the M11 will be equipped with Point to Point speed devices from August 1st 2009*

Once you enter the M11 for instance ,you pass a camera that takes a photo of your car and registration number and records the exact time, upon exit another camera takes a photo of your car and registration number, and records the exact time you leave the motorway.

The Cameras are set at a fixed points. With both the start time and finish time, a computer is able calculate the time it has taken for you to travel between the two fixed points, and works out your average speed and how many miles you may have travelled over the national speed limit and If you have completed the clocked journey too fast you are given a speeding ticket.

At the present time the national speed limit for motorways is 70 M.P.H. For every minute that you drive over the speed limit you will incur a fine of £30, and one point on your licence . The fines will be issued automatically but the MOT will be allowing a variance of 10% for 3 months, which gives a top speed of 77mph until the end of October 2009

The MOT will at a later date add cameras at all exit points along the motorways. Remember that now with the new legislation, fighting speed camera fines is almost impossible. You must prove the device is faulty and if you are not a technician working on them, you have no chance of beating the fine.

*You Have Been Warned *

I'm sure this is the sort of thing the national press would get hold of long before it's even given the go ahead, but anyone got more info on this ?

Seeing as I live next to the M25 would be very interested to hear more...

Thanks

Andy

I've seen no "point to point" cameras on the M1 and M25 this month...

Yeah, maybe a Google search would have been better to start with.... Embarassed

Thought of PGPGSW soon as I read it...

Had a feeling it was probably a load of bull.

Thanks for clearing that up ! Very Happy

Maybe at the moment but no doubt some untouchable in the House of Commons will see it, probably already has, and think 'Now that's a good idea' and a couple of years down the line it will be for real. SPECS are being spaced over a further distance and a couple of councils have systems where cameras can clock your average speed, so it's coming, you can be sure of that.

It's getting so bad I'm considering buying shares in a 'red flag' making company.

Sounds like a bit of "Chinese Whispers" to me. One person describes a Specs scheme and the next adds a bit to the story. After all, what is this "MOT" department? It's been the Department for Transport (DfT) since 2001.

While checking this, I noticed that Wikipedia - DfT notes that "Unfortunately the senior civil servants at the Transport department do not feel obliged to perform their duties to a satisfactory level" currently. Laughing

Or a recently unelected Lord thrice disgraced but somehow keeps coming back Shocked who seems to have the balance of power at the moment Shocked, not your average elected MP who is too busy filling in allowance forms to even think about 'point to piont' cameras Rolling Eyes

Although the quoted email is rubbish, I am sure that it is just a matter of time before such a scheme is introduced on all major routes.

It was inevitable as soon as ANPR cameras became available.

why would they even think of doing it that way? they make more money from a set-fee for fines - if it was less for only minor speeding offences they wouldn't get as much money so it won't happen...!

????
The fine would presumably be the same as for a speed camera offence now. And with every main route covered there would be more fines to collect.

I agree that bit would be pointless (no pun intended) and cost more to administer than it received. It would also mean that better-off drivers could afford to drive faster than the rest.

No, it will be the usual fixed penalty fine + points.

Putting the revenue point aside for a moment and thinking about safety - is a momentary over-speed more or less dangerous than a sustained excessive speed? I think average speed cameras are a good idea.

Bringing the revenue point back in, these average-speed cameras surely give the driver more opportunity to rectify any accidental speeding (perhaps have a cup of coffee somewhere in extreme circumstances). But if they can't remedy the situation then surely they HAVE been driving dangerously?

If they can, then the authorities actually get LESS revenue - so will it be introduced - naah, it's got to be a scam Shocked
