Should the 530 give a low battery warning before it dies?
I quite like using the device sans cables, but after a 2 hour journey the screen started to flicker and voice messages became garbled. About 3 mins after that i briefly saw a battery icon flash on the screen and then it shut down.
Is that right?
I'm a little disappointed in the battery life as i'm sure i saw claim that 5hours was expected, and even more annoyed that the unit will shut down without a low power warning to give you time to plug in. |

It should give a warning - on my borrowed 930 I forgot to plug it in and got the low battery warning icon for about 30 secs before I managed to plug it in.
You notice that the voices pack in before you get the low battery icon..... |

You should notice this and the device should knock the voices off prior to the low battery shut down being triggered, the 930 Andy is currently using has never done this though AFAIK, but its far from a normal device - Mike |

I was blasting up the M6 at the time so I wouldn't have been getting any nav instructions for quite a while prior to the icon appearing anyway.
It has been commented that since 8.302?? the voices etc all seem to stop well before the battery is flat - probably some bodge to try and stop the stuttering!
Seems pretty normal to me, apart from a sticker here and there |

probably with a brand new machine BUT that is more than likely with everything turned off ie voice muted and dim screen between instructions ,still doubt you will get 5 hours ...I'm lucky if I get 40 mins if I don't notice the mains lead is unplugged before her voice goes _________________ TomTom 5001 |

I'm 100% i got no warning icon, it's run out of juice twice now and both times it caught me by surprise.
The first time I was on a long stretch of the M6, so never noticed the broken voice or flickering screen.
Second time I was on the M53 passing through 3 junctions when I noticed the voice was akin to Norman Clolier and the screen flickered, I thought I had a faulty unit tbh and then the screen flashed up a full screen battery icon and it turned off. |

Mine puts up the low battery warning icon and switches off immediately. I can't say this is a consistent "feature" or perhaps "challenge", because I've only ever once used it on battery when Mike asked me how mine coped with it - lasted 40 minutes then voices turned to glop, another 20 minutes and even the glop disappeared, another 40 minutes and "Low Battery" puff (gone). _________________ Dennis

The icon is quite small in the bottom left of the map.
If you turn the map view off above a certain speed though I don't know if you get the warning icon or not - if you do it won't be easily visible against the black background.
Moral of the story - plug it in whilst navigating! |

Yes, two different warnings being talked about here....
The tiny red one in the bottom left corner and the full-screen image with the green background.
For me, the full-screen image only appears a few seconds before it turns off, but the other one lasts for a while. |

I have only ever let it get as far as the full screen one once and the same happened for me - it flashed up and the device turned off.
The low battery icon appears for a while on map view - I will try and force the issue on the blue screen and see what happens, but as it isn't that noticeable against the lighter background of a map if it does appear you would probably have to be looking for it to notice if you know what I mean. |

Like others here I get two low battery warnings.
The first is a small battery icon in the lower left hand corner next to where the compass icon is on my Go720. It displays as an empty battery with a flashing red line in it and displays for about two minutes. As AndyVaughan says, you have to be looking for it to notice it. Big&Bold it aint!
Next I get a full screen image of a battery against a green background with a Low Battery text message. Automatic shutdown is almost immediate after this last display. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599
