Watching the OS 3.0 SDk launch live, amongst many neat new features, OS 3.0 will add turn-by-turn to the mix. Developers can now build turn-by-turn apps, w00t!

Sorry, but all I see on that link is a poll and Q&A session.
I came across this http://www.forbes.com/2009/03/17/apple-iphone-ipod-technology-internet-infrastructure-apple.html and was going to add it to the previous thread but you beat me to it by some way. Must make more 'play' time.

Hmm, charging for a software update to introduce the most basic functionality such as "Cut n Paste"
Popular as this handset is I still don't see it as anything other than a basic phone in terms of functionality.
When it grows up I might be tempted, but will be leaving it well alone for at least another 12 months, they need to sort the hardware out and fit a decent GPS receiver before I would consider it - Mike |

No charge for iPhone. The charge applies to Touch only and is some bizarre accounting issue which even I have trouble understanding. Touch users have had to pay for every upgrade.

True but then I hardly ever use it as a phone. For me it's a connected device, and personally I find it far better for mobile web and email than WM ever was but each to their own.

I have one obviously and love it. It's not a fanboy issue, I'm well aware of its shortcomings but for me the pluses outweigh the minuses. I've had a string of PPC's and whilst they may be great for the inveterate tinkerers the iPhone does what I need of it and does it well.
If you don't want one then fine, no prob, I don't want a PPC until they sort out the OS, lets leave it at that eh? _________________ Darren Griffin

I read it as iPhone users would get the update free and iPod Touch users would pay circa $10, although I reckon its a typo here.
Quote: | The software will be available Tuesday as a developer beta and as a free update for iPhone customers sometime this summer. The software will cost $9.95 for iPhone touch customers.

Although I take your point about the GPS, it needs a very clear 'view' to get an accurate fix. _________________ Mike

The new iPhone OS will be available to developers starting today and the general public this summer. The firmware is free for iPhone owners and $9.95 for the iPod touch. "
So for those that are likelly to use it (i.e. for txt messages), it's free.
For those that want to make their music player do more, it's chargeable.
Seems pretty reasonable to me
However it's good news about the turn-by-turn stuff "as long as their own maps are used" - Come on Tomtom, get it released
