Approaching the Dartford Tunnel from the South last night (Sun) there were several "Average speed check" signs on the side of the road on temporary stands. On an overbridge were 2 or 3 vans on the far side so it was hard to spot them on the approach. Is this a new tactic, Mobile Specs?
I have not submitted anything as I only saw the one set of vans, I joined from the A2 so if there was another set somewhere they may have been behind me on the M25
Anybody else see these or others elsewhere? |

There are Specs cameras between the A2 and the Dartford tunnel, but occasionally Kent Police do set up a mobile camera van on the bridges over the M25/A282

Thanks for the reply
The fixed Specs have all gone from here since the roadworks have finished
If somebody knows vans are here occasionally should they be in the database?
I am not prepared to submit this one as I still believe there must have been another van somewhere that I did not see or are their signs intentionally misleading? |

I am not aware of any mobile SPECS using vans. The current type approval would preclude that kind of use anyway. The signs may relate to an earlier or pending SPECS installation.
As for the vans, they may or may not have been speed camera van's, impossible to say unfortunately. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Are they able to time you over a varying speed limit, the beginning is 60 mph and the end 40mph? |

No. I believe the limit must be a fixed speed for the whole section. |

Ah Ha...
Drove this route again and the permanent Specs have returned, BUT
There are 2 sites only:
60737 Start Camera at 60 mph
60722 End Camera at 50 mph
I can confirm that 60737 is correct, the speed limit changes roughly half way between the 2. 60722 is either 50 or 40. I was was preoccupied with the traffic to note where it changed from 50 to 40. It is defiantly not 60.
So how can penalties be enforced for this pair, or is it just all pretend |

Well if thats the case, I really dont know how they can work out your avaerage speed unless they have the exact measurements for the whole section.
e.g. 2 miles at 60 and 1 mile at 30 = average of 50 mph.
Kind of useless isnt it |

I agree, but think your maths is a little suspect although erring on the safe side
2 miles @60 = 2 mins, 1 mile at 30 = 2 mins. Total 3 miles in 4 mins. Av speed = 3/4*60 = 45mph |

I think we might be getting blinded by the Maths here
How could a case in court stand up when there is no proof which speed limit you have exceeded.
There was a set of Temp Specs on the A14 at Cambridge last year, I could not see any cables running from the base of the masts, nor between them and there were no obvious aerials for radio comms.
I repeat, is it all pretend |

I don't think so. ZZR said 'e.g. 2 miles at 60 and 1 mile at 30 = average of 50 mph.
Kind of useless isnt it '
I agreed with him, then did a bit of trolling by pointing out his mathematical error with a smile on my face.
If you chose to believe SPECS are a figment of your imagination, then that's fine by me
However, if 'your' variable speed SPECS time you at 70MPH through the 50/60MPH limit, you will possibly end up with an NIP on your front doorstep. |

To clarify my previous, it is only the temporary Specs that I am suggesting may be pretend, I am sure the permanent ones work.
However I still consider that a prosecution at Dartford would fail as which limit would they charge you with. e.g. if you traversed the entire section at 60 mph thus arriving at the other end too quickly, how could they prove you were doing 70 in the 60 or 60 in the 50?. NIPs delight in informing you of your exact speed, this all seems far too vague. |
