I can't remember that I've had my 920 talk to me unexpectedly but could this explain why I'm finding the battery flat when I try to fire it up - sometimes only after a few days from the previous use?
I'd always thought it was getting switched on inside the glove compartment / centre console by knocking the button on cornering etc. Why did TT remove the 5 sec press to start it? I thought that was a decent idea but it disappeared one upgrade I did.
I'll try the clear route method and see if there's any difference.

It is probably powering up on its own, its not even getting a knock in the glovebox, this is something quite a few of us have seen over the past few months with the x20 devices from time to time.
Try clearing the route prior to switching the unit off, although I have not found this to be very effective others have found it to help with the inadvertant switch on - Mike |

And as a second note, don't leave it in the glove box some low life will nick it, if you are not using it in the car for navigation of jukebox/ handsfree then leave it at home where it wont attract a broken side window - Mike |

Mike - thanks for the info. As well as the clear route thing, I wonder whether the start-up options might have anything to do with it? I can't remember all the choices but there's things like "continue where left off" and "ask for new location" etc. I generally have mine on the continue where left off option as it will keep navigating if I've turned off the ignition for any reason whilst on a route.
Is there a way of getting the 5 second switch-on back or would that mean rolling back to a previous version of the app. software?

The only way to get the five second switch on is with the version of software that did this on the device, I think the 5 second switch on was a bug rather than intentional to be honest, 2 seconds is more than long enough to power up a device IMHO - Mike |

Mine's done this a number of times.
I know the button's not getting knocked as it's happened:
1) On a shelf in my office during a conf. call
2) When on the kitchen fridge at night resuting in a flat battery.
3) Sitting on the dock switched off
Very annoying - and potentially dangerous. |

This is interesting to read, I have the same problem with my 520 just powering itself on randomly but more annoyingly I have a problem where it just wont turn off.
Press and off button and it switches off and immediately goes back on and loads up.
Tried all sorts of things from holding the button and pressing reset etc but it always gets stuck in a loop where it just turns itself straight back on.
Then eventually after half an hour of messing about it will suddenly turn off, and then half hour later it fires up again!!!!
Sometime I feel like throwing it out the window

Have had this problem ever since the software was updated to 8.010
The two issues i have noticed with this software is;
1) In order to connect to the PC i need to use the reset button, otherwise the tomtom doesn't recognise its connected to the PC. This was not an issue before the software update.
2) The other issue is that at times I have gone to use the tomtom and i have been unable to switch it on. I found it strange that the battery was fully depleted needing some charge before being able to turn on.
I now know why the battery died, its because this latest software causes the tomtom to randomly switch itself on. I researched this and found that i am not alone with this issue.

From the above thread
Quote: | using wordpad create a blank text file and save it as poweroff.txt (save as .txt document). Then using a file manager rename it to poweroff (remove the .txt suffix)
save this and place in the root of your tomtom. it will stop the repeating poweron/poweroff issues.
don't ask me how or why, it just works. |
Not sure if it works but i guess it can't do any harm.
Maybe the issue is that its not fully switching off, hence why i can't connect to the PC without a reset, and possibly a reason it turns back on. |

I asked this powering on question on another thread and I also have to use the reset button on my 730T to get my computer to recognise the unit. Thinking about it, it has been like this since I did some sort of an update. The switching on and flat battery is becoming a pain in the whotsit!!
Glad it's not just me.

I have the 720 and i'm guessing that tomtom will only fix these problems if they introduce a new feature that requires a software upgrade.
They should at least send everyone a special reset toothpick thingy seeing that i constantly need to use one, due to this software bug. |

First they have to find the bug... Not easy when obviously it doesn't happen for the vast majority of owners.
My 720 has never done it. |

DO YOU MIND? I can offer a nice line in handcrafted reset tools and I don't want TomTom putting me out of business.
Andy It doesn't happen to my 720 now either. That seems to be since I took off the RDS-TMC antenna. I put the RDS-TMC onto the 920 and that now does it frequently. _________________ Dennis

Nor has mine but may I direct you to the last post on page 6 and the first post on page 7 (by user 'istman') of a thread in a US gps forum:

Not sure what it all means but my gut tells me that maybe, just maybe, he's on to something. _________________ David |

What it means is the RDS-TMC antenna sends a noise to wake the thing up after it's gone to sleep. When it hasn't got an RDS-TMC, something else sends it a noise to wake it up. Or when you unplug it (from RDS-TMC or anything else), the noise of unplugging wakes it up. Sometimes. I think. Like my van gives me an electrical shock every now and then, even though I treat it kindly.
What the heck am I saying? I didn't understand a word of it!!
But thanks all the same, David. _________________ Dennis

To give you an update....
@ DennisN - How much for your handcrafted reset tool? Are they airline hand luggage safe?

Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support
We believe the issue with your device to be relating to your software installation, we therefore ask you to follow the steps below:
1- On your TomTom, reset the device to factory settings and also reset the battery.
To perform a Factory Reset and a battery reset please do the following:
• Switch on the unit
• Go to 'Change Preferences' (ensure all menu options are visible)
• Go to the last screen and select 'Reset Factory Settings'
• Select 'Yes'
• A language select screen will load up, when this happens, use a small pin or paperclip to soft reset the unit.
You can view step by step reset instructions here: http://www.tomtom.com/6965
• Then go through the setup procedure again if it asks you
• See if the problem continues.
2- If that does not resolve your issue, follow these instructions:
• On your computer open Start/My Computer
• Connect the device to your computer and turn it on.
• You will see a disk drive appear called 'internal'
• Right click on the disk drive and select 'properties'
• From the properties box, click on the tab called 'tools'
• Select 'Error Checking'
• Make sure both options are ticked and press 'start'
• Disconnect your TomTom and let it load up.
• See if the problem continues.
3- If the issue still remains, please follow these steps:
• Connect your TomTom to the computer and switch it on.
• Download the attached Clear Flash tool file and save it to your desktop
• Right click on the 'Clear Flash - All.zip' file and extract the files.
• A new folder will appear called 'Clear Flash - All', double click into it
• Click on the 'Clear Flash - All.exe' file.
• Proceed with installing the clear flash tool.
• Once completed, switch your TomTom off, then disconnect it from the PC.
• Switch your TomTom back on.
You should no longer have the issues that you are experiencing with your TomTom device.
With Best Regards
The TomTom Customer Support Team |
