Posted: Tue Aug 26, 2008 12:58 pm Post subject: poi database it all works but 1 glitch on an icon- why? |
|
|
I have downloaded some of the POi's from the database offered here (300,000 POIs for free)
I would like to ask any experts here this:
I also created my own excel .csv file in exactly the same format as those downloaded
I copied an existing (for a database not used) icon which I have renamed the same as my excel file.
All the database load up
I can select mine and it locates the POI BUT does not display the corresponding icon. just a green dot.
I have compared the icon size etc etc and it is the same as others.
any clues to fix this would be much appreciated
Thank you very much. |

I don't know much about the various Devices that use csv files, but it might help if we knew which unit you are using. _________________ Richard

garmin 60 CSX with 2GB mem card
every downloaded excel file with corresponding icon works
My file works but does not associate the icon the the file so although it displays the poi on the map it only gives me a green dot instead of the bespoke icon Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!
thanks Richard
and using City Nav Europe V9

How did you load the personal file?
Did you use POI Loader?
Was the icon no more than a 24x24 BMP image?
A&E_Hospital must have the icon name exactly the same A&E_Hospital for both the file and icon.
Your description of the resultant icon sounds like a Garmin Mapsource waypoint!
Are you sure the file is a POI file not a .gpx waypoint file when finally loaded? |

Yes to using POI loader
Yes to file name exactly as poi name
My personal excel file included with others in same folder
poi image details exactly as all others except in name
all files containing lat & long are in excel .csv format
POI is a bitmap icon with identical image properties as all other downloaded .bmp icons |

Try the same icon [re-named] for another database already working!
Keep a backup!
That way you will know if the icon is at fault or your personal database. |

is the bmp 8-bit (ie 256 colour) also, can you see all your file extensions in windows?
sometimes if windows hides the extensions then your file might actually be called something.bmp.jpg but it would hide the .jpg part...

I've renamed 6 different icons
same result
Q:
Must there be a reference INSIDE the excel file to the icon name?
No- icon not 8 bit -
All downloaded icons that work all have the same dimensions
as in:
width = 22 pixels
Height= 22 pixels
Horizontal resolution = 71 dpi
vertical resolution = 71 dpi
Bit depth = 24
format = bitmap
Frame count = 1
still head scratching.....running out of hair.... |

I just created a csv file and used the motorway exit icon and loaded it to my colorado.
The new file had
-1.14839 53.48054 A1 35S
-1.51602 54.94554 A194M A184
-1.54741 54.91289 A194M N A182
-1.53006 54.93418 A194M N A195
-1.54493 54.9132 A194M S A182
-1.52735 54.9343 A194M S A195
Named Phil_Try
Icon Phil_ Try
Are you using underscore _?
Worked a treat! |

PM your email address and I will send you that small file and icon and you can try it with POI loader.
Then you will know that it is the Unit or software. |

renamed both the file Soc_Gen
made no difference - (sorry)
BTW I use Garmin 60 csx
I am assuming that the only information in the excel file is lat, long and name, and anything else isn't required.
The find option on gps locates the poi correctly but still does not associate the icon (no matetr which I choose) to it and it defaults back to a green dot again.
this is getting on my tits! (if I had any!!)
and I did try an 8 bit icon instead of the normal ones - no joy |
