Hi Guys.

Sorry to double post but i'm desperate and getting no response from the dedicated subscribers forum.

The problem:

Following a download of the speed camera database I have lost all voice commands.. nothing available to select in the Language Screen! I think that files intended for my ipaq were inadvertantly downloaded to Navman when I connected to download the speed cams. I can see the voice files in a Strings directory but don't know how to get things back to normal. I am travelling thro' France on Monday next week and am getting desperate.. please help.

Cheers
Ian

Voices are in Sound directory, not Strings.

Have you tried reinstalling the sounds from the CDs you got with your 530?

Hi, thanks for replying.

The only discs that came with my 530 are a disc with SmartST and ActiveSync plus three discs containing maps.

Should I move the voices out of the strings folder and put them in sounds?

Cheers

Are you sure voices are in strings directory? Strings have extension ".res" while voices have extension ".dat".

Voices should be on your SmartST disk, I think. There should be an option somewhere on Navman's PC software to install voices on device -- try reinstalling them.

If ".dat" are correctly placed in Sound directory, are not corrupted and they are correct version (those for your iPaq will not work!) then 530 should just pick them up -- although nothing will be enabled by default! You have to find language setup screen somewhere in preferences menu and select one of the voices and save.

BLOW IT..they are all .res nothing in sounds directory and nothing on the disc (it only sets up your pc).

Their is nothing in the language setup screen except the option to enable/disable sounds

If language install feature is missing (I was sure it was there?!) there definitely is a way to reinstall software on a device -- that will restore voices as well (but only if you have none installed).

Also try looking into Navman PC Desktop install directory on your PC; should be in Program Files\Navman\something (probably SmartST2006 but not sure) -- if you also have iPaq PC software installed make sure to pick the correct one! If you find Sound directory with ".dat" files you can just copy over the ones you want to Sound directory on your 530.

I have looked thro' SmartST Desktop and the only files available are from Navman to activate the Maps...or I can 'update' the software which will add a patch ,,, where the hell are the sound files!!!

Thanks for persevering with me.

On CD or on your PC's hard drive?

Have you tried doing a search within your "C:\Program Files\Navman" (assuming that's where you installed Navman Desktop) for all files with extension ".dat"? It should dredge up something. If I remember correctly, sound files name format was something like XX_Y_N.DAT where XX is language/country (e.g. UK for British English, US for US English etc), Y is F or M and N is some number.

OK completed search of PC .. zero results for *.dat

I really didn't want to get a new satnav yet, this one is fine for me but useless without the voice commands!!

Cheers

This problem has some resonances from the past.

When the 510/520/530 came out, there was some enthusiasm to try to install different voices/warning sounds. However, if you tried, all voice commands would cease.

The solution was to re-install the original voice commands and warning noises. I can't remember what folders are involved.

Hmmm, weird.

Have you looked for that Desktop option to reinstall software on 530? If all your voice files are missing this should restore them.

Have you done a softw reset on the Navman? I remember a while back problems with the speed camera warning- if the sound file was wrong it would cause the spoken instructions to stop working.
A reset was needed to fix the problem
