Other than the usual - avoid snide cards and buy from reputable supplier etc
which card should I get?
When using a sandisk ultra in my digital camera it made a significant difference to the performance of the device. Do Sat Navs also benefit from faster cards?
I am a bit of a Sandisk fan anyway but is it worth spending the extra on a faster card for the 920T ? |

Looks OK, I use an 8GB SDHC Peak class 6 card in my units - the higher the speed the better the performance, also not slower cards might even cause the device to fail to boot up depending upon what you put on them. The card in your link is SDHC which will work fine in any x20 TomTom device, only the x20 units support the necessary protocols to use the SDHC type cards - Mike |

Thanks Mike - for a little over 8 squids I will chance it. Can always stick it in the digital photo frame with around 50,000 pictures on it if it is no good in the TT |

Possibly, but some photo frames only accept 511 or 1023 or 2047 pictures depending upon the device, so using a 4GB card in such a device would be akin to feeding a pig strawberries - also bear in mind whatever you put the card in MUST be capable of reading the SDHC format (which the TomTom is) - Mike |

Thanks - checked that on TT site and was joking about the photo frame although I will now have a look at it. |

When I get the SD Card how will it download?
Will I get an option to download the US maps straight to the card? I can't imaging it would try and split the files between the card and the device. The old version of the US map is on the device though. |

My experience was that I had to upgrade the W&CE map, copy it off to the PC, delete it from TT, upgrade the NA map, copy it to the SD card, delete it from TT, copy the W&CE map back to the TT. Reboot. _________________ David

Having had another play, TT Home sees the SD card as another device so you can move your old NA map there and then having selected that device you can update in situ. That's if you want the NA map on the card. _________________ David

You don't even need to do that.
When you start Hone (v2) the first thing it asks is which storage location you want to use, internal or SD. The map will be downloaded to whichever you choose. |

On my TT 520 a Transcend 8GB SDHC card "works" in that the unit can read the maps on it, but when the TT unit is used as a card reader, Windows - and as a consequence TomTom Home - cannot read the card at all. |

As this is the only thread I've found discussing it thought I'd ask here. | 8GB cards will work fine in the device (I use one made by Peak), as for the two links you have posted the first one appears to be a transflash card with no adaptor so stay away from that one, the second one does look OK though.
As Kattt has said though you need to ensure you get an SDHC style card reader to format the new card and write data to it, the TomTom will read the data from the card ONCE INSTALLED - Mike |

@ Katt & mikealder
Thanks for the info.
The first link I coppied from the wrong page I think. Sure both I was looking at were SDHC cards..never mind, I'll make sure I get the right one with a SDHC reader and format accordingly.
Thanks again. |
