Posted: Sat Mar 29, 2008 10:11 pm Post subject: Summertime Clock Change - Please Adjust Your Profile Setting |
|
|
An early reminder to all that the clocks will be going forward tonight and not only do we lose an hour in bed but we need to once again adjust our Timezone setting in the forum.
From tomorrow morning we will be moving to British Summer Time (GMT+1). So for our UK readers you will all need to change the timezone setting in your profile to GMT+1 either before you go to bed or when you awake to ensure your posts and those of others display the correct time.
The setting can be found in your profile accessed from the link at the top of the forums above:
In your profile, scroll towards the bottom where you will find the the preferences section and change the Timezone from GMT to GMT+1. If you are not in the UK then you should ensure you are using the correct time offset (+ or -) as necessary.
Unfortunately this has to done manually by every user when the clocks change but it is a simple process. When we return to GMT later this year the process should be reversed.

Mmmm Interesting.
I PREVIEWED my previous message (after I had forwarded time zone in profile) and it showed time as 23:13 (11:13pm) -although the REAL NOW time was 22:34 (+1hr offset=23:34). Okay, so I thought that was MAYBE the time YOUR thread had started.
I have just checked and it still shows about 25 mins previous. Is it me????
ACTUAL time when I NOW press the button = 22:36 (+1=23:36)
And the time above = ???? _________________ HTC OneX (IceCreamSandwich), HTC DesireHD (Gingerbread) Co-Pilot Premium, GoogleMaps+CamerAlert352

That's as it should be. Our server is out by about 17mins. Long story, plenty of threads on the subject elsewhere such as here. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Okay Darren. Point taken. Point taken
I didn't bother looking for any other threads (re server lag), as I thought this may have been something that had happened today, what with the clocks changing. To be truthful, I never really look at the posting time, it was just that this threadgot my attention.
Cheers

Why not just install an NTP client on the server?
If you're running Windows 2003 Server, I think it has one built in. |

Weird
Reset my profile and 'Time now' at the top of the page is spot on, it was 17 mins or so out as Darren said, has the server been reset or am I just lucky? Maybe this post will trigger the offset.
Got used to it now so it's not really a problem anyway
Edit: Nope, all times on forum and PC match and are correct _________________ Mike

Because we use hosted servers and don't have the option to do that, we have to rely on the hosts. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I have a question...WHY do we change the clocks twice a year? In my opinion it serves NO USEFUL PURPOSE.
Some places call it Daylight Saving. Stupid name. In October as the nights are getting darker and it's getting dark not long after 6pm we then change the clocks so that it gets dark AN HOUR EARLIER. This, to me, is just stupid. Daylight Saving my !
Rant over. I think we should stay with BST and have done with it.
Oh...and...just because "it's what we've always done" is not a good reason to continue with something as ridiculous as this.

Apparently it helps preserve daylight during the morning rush hour in the winter. This apparently helps to reduce accidents. No idea by what percentage, but I think that's the apparent logic behind it. I too think I'd prefer permanent BST. |

Personally I think we should stick with Greenwich Mean Time. Greenwich is in this country, you couldn't get a more meaningful timeline. _________________ Dennis

From the linked Wikipedia article: Quote: | Extra afternoon daylight reduces traffic fatalities;[5] its effect on health and crime is less clear. Although an early goal of DST was to reduce evening usage of incandescent lighting, formerly a primary use of electricity |
I couldn't agree more...but we actually change the clocks heading into winter to give us LESS afternoon daylight.
Quote: | Typically clocks are adjusted forward one hour near the start of spring and are adjusted backward in autumn. | Again - this madness has the opposite effect from the stated aim.
Moving the clocks back in Autumn robs us of daylight rather than 'saving' it. _________________ Paul

I was waiting for some one to come a long with the "we invented time" argument. _________________ Gone fishing! |
