The Nokia N800 (an open, portable, linux platform) has an option called the Nokia Navigation Kit - which costs as much as the device. I have my own BT GPS receiver, which could theoretically connect to an N800. The question is, what are all my software options?
Garmin?
TomTom?
Anything other than Nokia's proprietary add-on kit?
Theoretically, any linux nav package would work, at least if it's open source so it can be compiled. Or if there are N800-specific binaries that would interest me too even if they're proprietary.. just want to know what all the options are. |

And therein lies the rub, there aren't any Linux based Open Source navigation solutions that I know of. The only thing near is OpenStreetMap but that is a map collaboration project only.
What is the OS? Is it a Symbian variant or something new? TomTom's GO PND's use a version of Linux but that won't help you. _________________ Darren Griffin |

It uses Maemo, which is a variant of Debian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_N800).
BTW, I didn't think Symbian was linux. I keep reading that linux is a threat to symbian.

What if the processors match? Then there's a very remote possibility it might work. Perhaps worth looking into. Thanks for the tip!
I should also look at what's being done for OpenMoko and Android.. those are two other open linux-based smartphones w/ nav capability. |

NavIt is looking like a linux nav package that's getting momentum. I can see that it does run on the N800 (as well as the eee pc). The question is whether it's rdy for prime time - along with OpenStreetMap (which NavIt interfaces with). |
