TomTom GO 920 in for Review

We have just received our GO 920 review sample. We will be giving it a full road test over the the next week or so and will be paying particularly close attention to the Enhanced Positioning Technology (EPT) to find out just how good this is. For those of you who haven't heard of this feature, EPT is an electronic sensor system that allows the GO to continue navigation when the GPS signal has been lost.

When the satellite signal disappears, EPT takes over and provides acceleration and course change information to permit navigation to continue. This system, if it works well, should be particularly useful in tunnels, urban canyons and other similar environments.

The other significant changes from the 520/720 are 4GB of internal memory, a supplied RDS Antenna and Bluetooth Remote Control. And of course as the premium product in the range, the 920 comes with full Western Europe and USA/Canada mapping plus Guam (although I've never understood why!)

Do we know if the EPT is basically the same as the old ASN (Assisted Satellite Navigation) that was on the old Go models, or is it a totally different technology?

Hi Darren,

Do the voices distort on full volume when the battery runs down, same as the 720?

What version of Western Europe Map does it have?

How would you say the hands-free is Darren. Is it the same as the 520/720 were people say the quality is not so good. This is one of the things i would like to be reliable on whatever new TT i buy. Do you recommend this unit or wait for something newer. Hope this is not to soon to ask as i know you have just posted this.

Having had a 700 and a 910 and now a 920 I can honestly say, with the exception of the sound which is a bit tinny, the 920 is the best so far. I drive every week on the continent and from what I remember of ASN on the 700 was hopeless. The 920 performed brilliantly through all the tunnels in and around Paris, the cursor was only a few meters out on exiting long tunnels even in slow moving traffic

Darren, I am not clear on the new models. I have read the spec sheets etc at various places but it was something that you mentioned here that pricked my ears.
You mentioned that the 920 has 4gb of memory whilst the 720 has 2gb.
My 910 has a 20gb HD.
Am i missing something? as in the reason for this.
With 2gb and 4gb it seems limited compared to the 910 although in truth i dont think i ever use much of the 12gb empty on the 910.
So i am right in thinking that the 720 isn't card driven.
I really need to take the time to go and physically explore these models.
