Have you ever wondered whether your broadband connection speed is what you expect?
Perhaps this web site will help - here
Whilst I'm usually sceptical of such tests, this one has been recommended by a couple of people and seems to 'do what it says on th tin'.
I have recently experienced difficulties with my broadband connection and this test confirmed that incoming was OK (but a little slower than expected), whilst outgoing was acting up.
After several hours on the phone to my ISP and finally convincing them that there really was a problem, I got it sorted.
Now, my connection speed is just as I would expect _________________ Andy

As you are on the 4 mb/s download package you get 384 mb/s upload.
As i'm on 2 mb/s download i get the 256 mb/s upload limit...

I've used that site before, and it does seem quite accurate.
I get a less than average performance where I am anyway, possibly because of the distance I am from the exchange (under 2 miles, though!).
I refuse to "upgrade" my package with Orange until the speed gets to something near what I'm supposed to be paying for!
"Up to 8 MB!" - yeah, right....

If you're with cable (NTL / Virgin), your connection speed should be constant.
However, if your broadband connection is via a phone line then the connection speed will drop off the further you are from the exchange and if your neighbour has a similar connection.
This article explains cable vs phone line quite well - here
At the moment, NTL / Virgin offer 20mb/s, which will be upgraded to 50mb/s in the near future (at no additional cost) - however, 4mb/s and 2mb/s will remain unchanged. _________________ Andy

but they're not lying, you're not getting more than 8mb!!
paul, you need to phone virgin and tell them about all the wonderful offers you keep being sent and ask them if they'd upgrade your broadband free of charge in order to keep your custom.
that's what i did - i also blagged cheaper phone calls to mobiles

Unfortunately, as far as broadband is concerned, Virgin know that they have the edge because they can pretty much guarantee their customers' connection speeds, so it's only really TV and phone that you can bargain with...and they don't want to budge much
I've just spent two evenings trying to get them to sort out my broadband, which isn't easy when:
1) English isn't the first language of the person you're speaking to
2) they don't understand you
3) they don't understand the 'technical' stuff
4) they keep repeating themselves, until you're almost convinced that the problem may be at your end _________________ Andy

Sorry for the delay in writing, what with only being on 2 mbs. Did that with the TV, got £15 a month upgrade for £5 a month.
However wouldn't budge at the minute on BB - maybe in the New Year....

GPS_Fan - who are you with? Never had anything like that with Virgin Media. |

I have that on my regular calls to BT, it used to be a great company now the service sucks.
Every time you talk it is to somewhere in India, the staff read from a sheet, every extra phone call made starts back at the beginning with the exact same questions, but from a different voice.
If you dare ask a question not on their sheet they fall to pieces and have to refer to someone else. _________________ TomTom Go 60

I'm with Virgin Media.
After about an hour on the first evening, I was told that the guy was going to check something with his line manager and would then call me back...I'm still waiting for that call
At least the guy on the second evening kept me on the phone, so I didn't have to wait for that elusive call back.
What I think is a flaming cheek is that Virgin charge 25p/min for their broadband support - but they do refund the cost of the call if the fault is at their end
I told a friend that the experience was a bit like walking into a curry house and ordering a Chinese _________________ Andy

Interesting, my speed has always been around 4mb/s (give or take a few kb/s here and there) whereas other places I've used to test my connection speed have been up and down like a yo-yo on speed _________________ Andy

Privateer,
Are you testing your connection speed via a company intranet, or are those test results for a domestic connection (BT/Virgin)?
If you're using a company intranet, then the speed might appear to be affected by other traffic using the network _________________ Andy
