How I can design my own icons for newly created POIs on my Pocket PC? At moment when I create my own POI the standard icon is a yellow box with a star in the centre. But what I would like to do is create ones with capital letters with ideally different colour backgrounds. How do I do this and which software programme do I need use? I have MGI Phosuite 4 (old), Adobe Photoelements 2.0 and & Photoimpact 8? Are any of these OK? Also how can I get the icons to a the standard 8 bit 22 x 22 bmp file size??

Hi CS,
I don't have any of the programs you mentioned so I can't advise you specifically on those, but you should have MS Paint on your PC (standard art program) which I find is perfect for creating your own bitmaps for POI's.
If you start MS Paint and go to 'Image' and then 'Attributes', you can resize the image to 22 x 22 pixels. Another tip is to go to 'View' and 'Zoom' to make the image big enough to see what you're drawing. If you press CTRL+G you will also bring up the grid, which makes more precise drawing easier.
When you save your image, remember to save it as a 24-bit bitmap otherwise it won't show up on your Pocket PC screen when you load the POI file onto your hardware.
HTH.
Regards,
Bo Peep. _________________ TomTom 730

Having taking the advice of Bo Peep I can only get so far in what I want to achieve. Ideally I would like to create icons for my own POIs with deifferent coloured backgrounds and letters taking up the whole of the POI icon. Resizing to the full size of the area and centering the letter is tricky enough but when I reduce the area to 22 x 22 size the letter disappears!
Has anyone got any good tips how to do this?
Help!! |

22 pixels x 22 is exactly what it says, if you have a grid 22 x 22, each of those 484 pixels can be a different colour, but that's the limit of the detail available. It sound as if you might be trying to condense to much detail into to small a space.
Best of luck

You will have to use a paint brush tool and have the image at 22x22 pixels and manually draw on the letters. When you resize an image to such a small one, most normal letters will disappear or become so thin and faint it just won't work. Use a paint brush and hand paint the letters on pixel by pixel and you should be ok. Best to use upper case as it will stand out more. |

Hello...
I know this is a old thread, but a have one question.
Can i make the POI-icons with transparent background?
I know BMP's dont support transparency but take a look on my thoughts:
Like the TomTom startmenu-logo. I can see this have a cind of pink background when wieving on my PC. is the pink a coulor that will appear transparent on a PocketPC?? _________________ Gunnar Nystul, Forum Admin, TomTom Forum Norway and Nystul Navigasjon |
