|
|
Hi, I have a TomTom Classic running version 5.440. I have been away for, well years and although using the Classic I do so infrequently.
Could one of you fine gurus point me in the right direction for the following please?
Should I update the software? If so how do I find it and how to do it?
Should I update the maps? If so how do I find them and how do I do it?
Is the Classic still supported or is it a ..... heap of crap that you all are laughing at me for still using?
Thanks in hope ... |

Nowt wrong with the Classic, it is a true Classic and if it suits you there is no need whatsoever to change it
You can update it's base software to the latest Version 6, you'll need to install the TomTom HOME Application on your PC to do this, see here.
Once you've got that you can if you wish purchase the latest map from TomToms on-line shop (it's downloaded to HOME once paid for) here. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Make sure you have a Full Backup, as insurance, before you change anything. ;) _________________ Richard

Sounds like your SD card ain't big enough!
Assuming you have a card reader, use TT home to read the card & remove most of the voices to make room for the newr/bigger firmware |

that's fine.
If it's still frozen, take the SD card out then use reset pin for 30 secs then (if it turns off), insert SD & press/hold power button on for 10 secs. |

OK That got it to reboot and I saw a DOS type screen.
It reboots 3 times changing from a progress bar to splash screen and finally stays at the splash screen.
I deleted all maps off the card so only GB maps are present.
Crap!!
Can I take a stab in the dark here and say perhaps the version being doenloaded and installed by the TomTom Home is not compatible with my Classic? After all it does say it is for a GO which mine is not?
I have tried doing a restore and it does nothing!!!!! |

V6.525 is compatible with the Classic and doesn't cause any problems normally. In fact the Classic seems to be more stable than the other GO's. ;)
One point, I would have done a Backup with Explorer, rather than HOME. As would have a lot of other people.
The recycling re-boot was a common observation when booting from pre V6 to V6.xxx. Normally you just had to wait for it to finish.
How long did you leave it on the Splash Screen?
Are you sure you have a FULL BACKUP of the Maps? That's the most important thing. Software is easily sorted.
My suggestion would be to Reformat the Card and Load the Application only.
Then try rebooting. If all is OK it will stop when it can't find a Map.
Then add the Map.
At each time of disconnecting, make sure that it has stopped writing to the Card. Better to use Safely Remove Hardware if using Explorer, or My Device at the bottom of the HOME Window. If using HOME. _________________ Richard

okey dokey pig in a pokey
I changed to a 2GB SD card and when I connected HOME it not only said it required the new firmware but also a load of other voices.
I installed and rebooted and it worked fine but obviously reported no maps.
I purchased the latest maps and installed and rebooted.
Result.....a nicely updated TomTom Classic.
Thanks folks Im a happy chappy once more.
I'm sure 2GB is OTT but hey if it works |

Good result.
At least with the 2Gb card you could add Western Euro & USA if you wanted to. |

morning all.
Well I had a fresh look this morning and could see I was only using 317mb of the 2GB card so the 1GB should have been plenty.
I therefore copied the 2GB contents to my hard disk and reformatted the 1GB and copied back to that one and hey presto it all works super.
I guess the first stab at updating the 1GB card stuffed it some how.
all's well that ends well
:D |
