This is a newbie question, but if I was to develop software with the TOM TOM Nav 2 SDK to integrate TMC data via GPRS, where does that TMC data come from. I've read I think that the data is free (but I might be wrong) but does anyone know who supplies the feed?

Cheers

Ian

I don't know the true 'source', but for the UK it seems to be from a company iTIS. Doubtles they get teh info from somewhere else.

The data is free to receive (in most countries) via an RDS-TMC receiver.

However, companies like iTIS charge to become a licensee of their data (companies like VDO-Dayton have a license, as do TeleAtlas and Navtech). However, the data is not freely available except over RDS-TMC, so your GPRS solution is going to need to link to a system that provides the data.

I guess you could setup an RDS-TMC receiver, convert the information, and then provide it via GPRS. However, the first thing you will need in this scenario is a license from iTIS as far as I can see. However, the TomTom PDA maps do not include TMC reference data, which you'll need to process the raw RDS-TMC data into useful information to present on the map.

As for where iTIS get their data from - a number of sources - the AA, large fleet vehicles (eg Eddie Stobbart lorries) which carry devices tracking the vehicle and recording the traffic situation, plus sensors on the road network too.
