|
|
I had to do a repair on a 510 for a friend today, so whilst the unit was handy I thought I would have a play with Text To Speech
Using a 2GB SD Card I spliced maps and Loquendo TTS Folder (Stripped down to just one UK Voice "Kate") fired it up and no problem at all TTS Voice on the 510.
Problems may be
1: Voices will be copyright so it may be a violation of TT Terms to use them on a 510/710
It will be interesting to see if TT release the voices for this machine bearing in mind you DO need a much bigger SD Card for the job
Hope that helps

I find it surprising that you need such a large capacity SD Card. CoPilot Live 5 also has TTS yet it can all run including the UK maps on a 256mb SD Card. There TTS engine and coding must be very bloated in comparison to CoPilots implementation. _________________ Graham.

The TomTom Text To Speech System is bloated, at just over 4GB, By removing all the foreign language files you can can get it down to about 700Mb with that and the 510s UK&MRWE it just fits on a 1Gb card, |

And the TTS on TomTom is a world apart from that on CoPilot. _________________ Darren Griffin |

OK, I'm going to wait this out and see what transpires. I have a spare 1GB SD card sitting around doing nothing and I'd like TTS. But I only need UK roads and one voice is fine.
If this gets more documented I might try this route. |

While I accept that the TomTom will be an improvement over the OLD CoPilot, I was just suprised at the total size of the TTS. _________________ Graham.

I think the omission of TTS on the 510 and 710 is a great missed opportunity by TomTom.
If the single voice/UK roads only files were to be made available, then I too would be very eager to try them on my 510, even if it means buying a slightly larger SD card. _________________ TomTom 720

Interesting thread,
Perhaps TT need to do some thinking about incuding TTS on at least one other unit in the range.
After all it's just been proved it's not that difficult to do. _________________ Thanks,

Would this work on the ONE or the GO series? Or is it just the new x10 range? Or does it need 'testing'? _________________ Tom Tom ONE |

If it is going to work it will not be until V6 is out as there are no tts options in the current firmware on the one.. |

True, but I think they would be concerned about the effect on 910 sales. |

My 510 has the option to speak road names but when I try and turn it on it complains about the voice and says it can't be done, what do I need to change? |

The option is in the firmware but the TTS Voices are not on the 510 Memory Card (The Full TTS Voice Pack is just over 4GB, and a Cut Down pack with just the UK Voices is 700Mb),
So to get it to work on your 510 you need
1: Access to the voices from a 910
2: A Much larger memory card than the stanrd one supplied
and it would probably be illegal as it involves making a copy of voices you do not own |

True - but think of the units they are not selling because users can't justify the upgrade to a 910. _________________ Thanks,

I can't see that many people not buying any x10 becaue they really want TTS and can't afford or justify the 910. With the current design TT would have to add a disk or a 4GB SD card to one/both of the lower models, even though it has been proven that only 1GB is necessary. That would price the 510 out of the lower end market, leaving the 710 as the only real option for this - but I doubt that the NA maps, audiobooks etc. would be enough to differentiate the 710 and 910. You would effectively end up eliminating the 710, although I would expect sales of that model to be the lowest of the three anyway (if they ever ship it).
Obviously we would all prefer lower prices and more features, but from the seling perspective I would say that TT have got the feature and price structure about right. |
