Hi
I need to buy a second copy of TomTom Naviogator 5 (GB/Europe on CD) for my wife's PDA but the TomTom site says this:
"Currently not available through TomTom.com"
Does this mean that version 6 is about to be released?
If I manage to buy TT Navigator 5 from a retailer, what has been the upgrate policy in the past (I would expect that recent purchasers should get a free or very cheap upgrade)
Thanks, |

In the past, I believe purchasers 3 months or newer were given a free upgrade, however this was in the past and may not happen again.
You have been warned.
You could of course install your copy of tt5 on your wifes PDA?? _________________ -------------------------------------------------------

Hi
I have contacted TomTom to ask the original question. I'll keep you posted.

You are legally allowed to install tomtom on your own devices as long as you are only using one at a time. You own the tomtom program and the PDA don't you. Unfortunately, the OP was not clear about whether they would be used at the same time.
I was only offering advise to the original dilemma that the OP had, however will remember that you obviously do not require any advise when you post future questions.
I would not condone anything illegal, including speeding however I have got the speed camera database installed, does that mean I condone speeding???
In future, try being helpful and if you can't, don't bother posting.
Ps. You are entitled to your opinion, freedom of speech and all that stuff, but last I checked, your post was neither informative nor helpful to the original question, and if you checked, I also stated that in the past tomtom upgraded the software for free if it was less than three months old.
Oh, and are you not the person that last year posted several questions about rest area POI problems both in this forum and in other ones?? I thought that was a classic sign of an ILLEGAL COPY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh no you dont!!!
You have a single non-transferrable, non-exclusive licence to USE the software and maps.
Thats the whole point of having to register! |

Lupsos,
as Greenglide has confirmed you do not own the software. You have a licence to use it for one person on one device. The licence is personal to you and cannot be given to anybody else. The only way you are allowed to use it on a second device is if that device is for your use and you delete it off the first. Making a copy onto a second device, or for anybody else's use, as you suggested, is both a breach of the licence conditions and illegal. It is also against this forum's rules.
I think it is helpful to point out to somebody with a problem that a way suggested to overcome it was both a breach of their licence agreement and illegal. I am sorry that you dont.
I am please to see that OP has done the best thing and contacted Tom Tom about his original problem, which was that he was unable to legitimately purchase a second copy of TT for his wife.
I am not sure the relevance on your comments on TT allowing upgrades. You still need to have a legal copy, and you can't put the upgrade onto a different machine or give it to a different person.
Finally I am sorry to disapoint you and ruin your argument but your memory is probably fading somewhat. I have never asked any questions on this or any other forum on rest area POIs. _________________ Peter

Not true, actually. If you put it on a second machine, you must delete it from the first

So, when I eventually 'pop off', I assume that my TT software, and all the other stuff that I have on my laptop, PC, and PDA will all die with me ? Perhaps I need to amend my will to ensure that the kids destroy the lot ??!! |

Ahem,
If as OP I may intrude with a little more info relating to the original topic ;-)
I've got a reply from TomTom. Not at all helpful as it happens:
QUOTE
Our Navigator 5 kits for wired / Bluetooth receivers are available for sale from our website here:
http://www.tomtom.com/products/category.php?ID=1&Language=1
If you prefer to purchase from other websites or dealers, then you can check here:
http://www.tomtom.com/stores/index.php?Language=1
We do not offer a free upgrade when new products are released. In the past we have offered a discount to our current users who wish to upgrade when new products are released. We expect to make an upgrade offer in the future, but we do not know when the new software for PDA's will be ready for release at this time. Please sign up for our e-mail newsletter when visiting our site and you will be kept informed of any developments.
UNQUOTE
- They have completely failed to address the issue of why they aren't selling the UK Maps & application any more (ie without the GPS hardware)
- They refer me to a completely unsatisfactory list of retailers (eg Halfords and other high street stores) which I suspect specialise in TomTom GO rather than what I want
- They expect me to buy an end of life product (if I can find it) and then pay an undefined upgrade cost at an undefined time (next week? next month? ???)
Quite honestly, they can hardly occupy the moral high ground regarding licensing and piracy when they treat a loyal customer who is trying to do the right thing in this way.
Having used TomTom for many years I am starting to look around at the competition.
ps - I replied with a request for further infornation. Watch this space... _________________ TomTom 930T |

You can buy maps direct from TomTom, on SD card - either individual countries or the whole of Western Europe
Check here

Thanks, but:
- This doesn't include the application
- Very expensive way of buying maps if I want more than just GB _________________ TomTom 930T |

Last year the Upgrade from V3 or V4 to V5 was £46 and you got the maps of Europe CD as well.
Upgrades seemed to have a priority over software on its own as you couldnt buy the new software on its own for months.
Any dates tomtom give you about release dates are pure conjecture and probably only true on a special calender used only by tomtom.
