|

Hi,
Got TomTom 2 today finally.
When I try plotting a fastest route in Tom Tom the route it offers doesn't to me seem to be the quickest.
For example to get a work I join the motorway for a short stint, get off and join a major road for a few minutes and I'm there.
TomTom however tells me to go a totally different way which to me seems alot longer to get to. The small roads it suggests are now full of bloody speed bumps so not really ideal.
So what I am wondering is if their is an option in Tom Tom where you can set your prefered road types like you can do in AutoRoute so that when routes are calculated the program takes this into account.
Thanks |

I'm no expert but I have found that TTN just works out the fastest route based on your speed settings. This does not take into account the local conditions such as traffic lights, local speed restrictions and other traffic. The only way I've found to make it use certain roads is to alter the speed settings in such a way as to make certain classes of road very slow therefore making it use others. It won't really solve your particular problem which is based on local knowledge which TTN obviously doesn't have. That's the only method I've come up with so far anyway. In my case as a truck driver I obviously try to stay away from the small minor roads so I set the speeds for them at around 5mph thereby making the system chose the major roads as much as possible. Sometimes it works, other times I end up on some very dodgy roads
Maybe someone with more technical knowledge can come up with any other ideas.

If it is just your normal getting to work, you don't need TomTom to show you the way!
What I have done to get over the problem is to zoom right in on the map in certain areas where I know there is always congestion and put an avoid on a small bit of road there.
If you have ever used the shortest route option, it takes that a bit too literally, taking street by street turns through housing estates to cut 10 yards off a major route, and also across tracks on farmland.
I would like to be able to put vias or waypoints in my route and preferences for each section of my route. |

! Yeah I should know the way to work! :D
I suppose that when I am going to unknown places then obviously thats where Tom Tom is needed, its just that I prefer major roads and motorways to small roads - atleast if you do get totally lost then you have lots of signs.
Thanks for the advice. |
