Is it possible to buy the Road Angel GPS Speed Camera Detection unit with Tom Tom software on an IPAQ 3870 Question

If so, where would I be able to purchase a connecting cable and would I need anything else Question

You just need a serial interface for your PPC.

See: http://pc-mobile.net/pdaserial.htm

You also need an extension serial cable which is available from most PC accessories shop.

The Road Angel has a Holux GPS engine and you can purchase a cable set from http://www.holux-uk.com/Products/RoadAngel/adapters.htm[/url]

I read somewhere that you won't get two apps talking to the same GPS Receiver.

Will Road Angel & Tom Tom operate simultaneously without problems

Thanks for the quick replies so far Smile

Yes the Road Angel will because basically what is is doing is taking the GPS feed, and creaeting a duplicate of it then sending it out to the Serial port on the back of the Road Angel, so you will be able to use both at the same time without fail.

The only thing with the Road Angel is that it doesn't output GPGSA and GPGSV which means you won't see any sat bars in TomTom or other apps, but it will still work and give you navigation, you just won't be able to see the satellite strengths.

Last Questions

Is the Origin b2 much better than the Spped Angel ?

Is there a retailer who would supply and fit all the required kit - hardwired in car electrics rather than cigarette lighter ?

Actually you can see the number of satellites in view and in TT2 on the map and navigator screens. You just don't see the grey/red bars and the 2D/3D fixe info on the GPS status screen.

Exactly, this is the GPGSA and GPGSV data that's missing from the NMEA stream.

Need a bit of help on this...

Have an Ipaq 3660 with a serial cable going to my Road Angel. Have got the GPS output on the Road Angel yet doesn't seem to work on TomTom..

Do you know what settings I have to set the GPS on the Ipaq to, to work with Road Angel? Do I have to setup the serial connection?

Based on the info before do i understand that entering the GPS section and looking at the status will not show my long&lat fix but if i looked in setting a route on TomTom then it would work?

If anyone can help from the beginning of setting it all up, it'd be much appreciated.

Cheers

Darren

First of all where did you get the cable set? Does it have built in denull? If the cable is ok do you have a newish Raod Angel? If so it outputs NMEA @ 4800. The older verson with the older firmware outputs at 9600.

In the GPS utility, go to the GPS tab and uncheck the top left box, set the top option to NMEA 0183v2 4800 or 9600, and the second option to Serial Cable on COM1, then check the left box.

Hope this works!

Cheers....

Well to start off with it's a brand new Road Angel....

Then basically I got a serial sync cable and found it had the wrong end on it so then further bought a M/M 9 way serial cable so it would connect to the Road angel - guess this may be where it's gone wrong?

Seen mention of having to set-up the serial connection in "connections" and setting it to a Hayes compatible on COM1???!!!???!

Or maybe I just need to get the proper 1 cable?

Sounds like the cable - you need one of these http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=NM-D9F-D9M to feed out of the RA or you could get a "proper" cable set from Holux UK wihich also charges the ipaq at the same time....
